This is a helpful outline. The leaves are split into maternity (for birthing parent or surrogate parent only) and parental (parental can be taken by either parent)

This is the basic plan in Canada (except for Quebec, which does its own thing), and then employers can offer varying top-ups. You must have paid into EI beforehand, and have at least 600 hours of work in the 52 weeks before the start of your leave.
