I was under the impression that the new VR thing was the whole set-up. If the Steam Machine is just a console that lets you play Steam games then holy shit I'm definitely gonna get that

assuming it isn't $1000 in which case lol. lmao.
Welcome to fam, ya'll!

in fairness he did a better job being a shithead for no reason than he did in the entire first movie. So I think Chris Pratt probably just ad-libbed this
Mario Galaxy movie, just because chris pratt is voicing the character doesn't mean mario has to be written as an asshole.

it is kinda funny that out of all Disney villains Tetsuya Nomura decided Maleficent and Pete should be the recurring villains in Kingdom Hearts

Maleficent who cast a curse on a 16 year old then turned into a dragon for like 2 minutes. And Pete who is just kind of a bully and not really malicious

As a direct result of voice actors being treated like a sideshow for decades, it became more important to book conventions than it did to book acting roles.

Voice actors are always insisting they are ACTORS first and foremost. Now acting has to share space with “sales person” and “influencer.”
This affects you - the audience - more than you think.

Because there are no residual payments on videogames, many actors rely on convention appearances as a replacement income.

Because cons = $, cons have begun expecting talent to make it through YOU (no appearance fee).

You’ve been tip-cultured.
Ask literally any voice actor if they get royalties from the video games they worked on.

They will tell you no. They might even laugh.

Now imagine any developer actively trying to use AI VO to save money wanting to offer something like that.

It was already depressing enough to enter the industry and realize so many VAs were vying for the most popular roles, to the point that it became somewhat cutthroat behind the scenes. Because otherwise they don’t get con invites.

Imagine a massive pool of talent all trying to get one job.

Now imagine that pool becoming infested with AI piranhas that will devour half the talent because they aren’t willing to sign their voices away to the techbros who think they know how art should be made and how much money they should be making from it.

It is depressing to watch play out.

people are bringing up Animal Crossing as an example of big AAA games that aren't violent but... it's also a Japanese game. How many big AAA games made in the west aren't violent? Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto, Elder Scrolls.......... or sports.
Infinity Nikki’s Infold Games believes there’s ‘untapped demand’ for non-violent big-budget games.

“Historically, the West associated non-violent successes with indies".

Also, re: "they get royalties", how much money is that? Does it make up for the lack of continued work?

Paying next to nothing is still "getting paid royalties" but is functionally nothing.

Dropping cosmetics prices and refunding players who already bought them is a fun distraction from all the negative talk about not using human voice actors for your NPCs

But it also follows that if you can afford to cut prices and do refunds, you could afford to pay human actors to voice your NPCs.

Despite the actual actor only appearing in two episodes of the series, the memetic concept of "Don Knotts" has powerfully tied itself to the Scooby-Doo franchise, to the degree that even without the involvement of Knotts, they simply keep inventing new Don Knottses

I will be boycotting the Super Mario Galaxy movie. Nintendo have proven themselves once again to be cowards for skipping Super Mario World because they are afraid of giving us Oogtar. Shame on them.

Super Mario World has an extremely eclectic art style whereby many enemies are drawn in completely different ways. Development files reveal Mario went through many stylistic changes; it is possible that all the enemies were made to fit Mario, but at different points in time.

I don't like when people refer to media as "content" because it makes it feel like a show or a game or whatever is meant to be watched and then tossed away without a second thought. It's shallow, very much anti-art, in how it strips away meaning

but The Super Mario Bros. Movie feels like "content"
the new Mario Galaxy movie doesn't look good but I can't put my finger on why it and the first Illumination give me such an ick

The Joyce Carol Oates and “books written between 1890-1930 are so ALPHA” thing struck home because it showed how many elites nowadays lack the ability to be moved or find meaning in art beyond what we did watching John Wick and going fuck yea this rules and that explains why they believe in AI art

It is a staple mantra in the games industry, "Our pay for [X] is comparable to the industry's average wages," to which I would reply, "when you're raking in record profits, it's pretty lame to justify substandard pay with, 'that's what everyone else does.'"
Even on projects that don’t feature AI, it’s often difficult to justify how little voice actors get paid for work on projects that sell in the millions

So it’s fascinating to see folks say “they were compensated fairly” repeatedly on this occasion where we don’t even have the voice actors credited.
The argument I'm hearing about it is "the voice actors got paid for it so it's all good"

We don't know how much they got paid, or if they get royalties every time those lines get used.

It's a slippery slope being brushed off because "game good"

if Arc Raiders had plagiarized art, would it matter?
