As the stars
grew near
they became
more and more
like the lights
of seven cities.

As we neared one
I saw that the lights
were all moving
like many tiny ants
carrying lanterns.

Then we entered the city
and I understood.

The lights were ghosts.
I could see them
even from far away, as lights.

Feds told Oregon grocers they couldn’t offer 10% off to SNAP recipients, so they got creative

Vampire bats produce an anticoagulant called draculin that helps them feed on blood without it clotting.

Scientists are studying possible human uses for the blood thinner, so if you overhear a nurse ordering you a dose of draculin, don’t be (too) afraid.

The cloud ghost flew into
what I thought was the sky
and I soon discovered
to be down
into a vast cavity
in the dream version
of this world.

I followed them
deeper and deeper
into darkness
the stars all orange
or amber-colored
and seeming to flicker.

The stars ahead of us
slowly got brighter.
