MAN FINDS TAPE immediately goes high on the list of my favorite 2025 discoveries. Wonderfully sinister in a way that echoes some of my favorite horror novels; definite shades of McCammon's Stinger and Barker's Great and Secret Show at points. Highly recommend this one.

weirdly enough, the shadow of the Netflix deal looming over everything makes Kill Bill land a lot harder for me upon theatrical rewatch

This sale is a disaster for the city of Los Angeles. I stand with the WGA, the DGA, and every other worker that powers Hollywood.

Theatrical releases are what make movies both magical and profitable. Without them, the industry, and in turn, Los Angeles, will suffer.

very much taking solace in the fact that the only people in Hollywood who are even remotely enthused about the Netflix deal are Sarandos and Zaslav

I got this theory that a lot of the anti auteur stuff gets boosted as a way to weaken creative labor organizing. So much of an artist’s value is dependent on their voice and you started to see this come up when the studio centric push for big film franchises was happening.
I have never seen someone meaningfully oppose auteur theory because every person I've ever seen opposing it is like "I think it's justification for artists being assholes" which is so weird, because auteur theory is a frenchman asking "why are there so many cuckolds in french movies?"

Now more than ever, we need a new United Artists
Honestly we should get together and start our own studio before there’s nowhere to sell things to

Netflix buying Warner Brothers is the day that Netflix officially becomes the establishment. It is both the day of their ascendancy and also the day that Netflix admits that they are now the incumbent power yearning to be disrupted by whatever comes next.

Harry Dean Stanton and it isn't even a contest
This is a Bill Simmons game, but you’re stranded on a desert island. You can only have one actor’s filmography. You get it all, including cameos. But just the one performer.

I’m taking Cate Blanchett: Talented Mr. Ripley, LOTR, Life Aquatic, Black Bag, Tár, Ponyo, Hot Fuzz, Eyes Wide Shut, Thor

one of the lesser fundamental problems with AI art is that, even if you lean into its aesthetics, you will never be able to accomplish anything that Chris Cunningham didn't already do 30 years ago with way less advanced tech

defunctland videos are great because everyone in charge of disneyland for the past half century have been trying to carry out what they think walt would’ve wanted like they’re the patriots in MGS trying to carry out the boss’s will. coincidentally both involve giant robot dinosaurs

the funniest thing about the Rush Hour 4 greenlight is that, while it's absolutely going to be bad and will flop, people are not prepared for HOW bad it will be

Everyone is ignoring the funniest option here, which is "force them to let you make movies yourself"
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

Hey @reptedlieu.bsky.social, how does attacking another fairly elected Democrat help us fight Trump? Not sure I agree with you 100% on your police work there
Trump is filling his government with Nazis, consolidating authoritarian power, and eroding democracy at every chance.

And yet these 86 House Democrats voted for a right-wing messaging amendment to say that the real authoritarians are the socialists.

Pathetic.
