QUNO has joined an international coalition of Quaker-led organizations in discerning that the ongoing military action of the Israeli government against Palestinians constitutes #genocide.

We continue to call on the international community to act; to use diplomacy to implement a permanent #ceasefire, to ensure access to humanitarian aid, to hold responsible parties accountable, and to conduct any steps toward peace with a mind toward justice and healing.

Rather than trying to encapsulate this tragedy in our voice, we at QUNO hope readers will take time to see and hear it in the voices of those who live it. inthesetimes.com/article/gaza...

While words fail to capture the magnitude of human suffering this chapter of conflict has wrought on the region, the words of those directly impacted must be heeded so that action can be taken to end the violence and build toward peace.

Hundreds of people still remain in captivity as hostages or detainees, thousands are at risk of famine, and nearly 2 million are displaced. We continue to hold these people and their communities, familial and otherwise, in the Light.

Today marks 2 years that the Palestinian people have endured #genocide waged by the Israeli military. As #Quaker values uphold the dignity of every life, we mourn over 1,200 Israelis killed by Hamas at the beginning of this conflict and over 67,000 Palestinians killed since.

In an increasingly polarized world, QUNO’s work in peacebuilding, climate justice, and human rights embodies this call, building foundations for peace by loving our global neighbour. From our Meeting Houses to the community of the United Nations, may this love be a guiding Light.

On this #WorldQuakerDay, we celebrate the theme “Love Your Neighbour," a call to faith in action and an affirmation of that of the divine in everyone. fwcc.world/event/wqd-20...

The continued existence of these weapons and the continuing stories of people who have been impacted by them are poignant reminders that the threat of nuclear war is not a relic of the past, but rather something that must be addressed in the present to ensure a peaceful future.
quakerunoffice.bsky.social
Today there are an estimated 9,600 nuclear weapons remaining in military arsenals around the world, and as recently as this March QUNO welcomed a delegation of survivors of the bombings.
quakerunoffice.bsky.social
Estimates put the loss of life between 150,000 and 250,000, with countless others affected by exposure to radiation. Still the only use of #NuclearWeapons during wartime, the bombings shocked the world with their power and instilled trauma that has lasted for generations.
quakerunoffice.bsky.social
This year, 6 August and 9 August mark the 80th anniversary of the #nuclear bombings of the Japanese cities of #Hiroshima and #Nagasaki, respectively. Using two different weapons, dubbed “Fat Man” and “Little Boy,” the US military effectively destroyed both cities.
