Certain Americans *ahem* were upset about the cost of food in the US, so they voted for the guy whose plan is to deport most of their agricultural workforce and just straight up raise prices on food coming in from other places.

Indeed. When they rounded up the Japanese Americans, myself and my family included, for internment during WWII out of fear over Japanese spies and saboteurs, two thirds of us were U.S. citizens.
