If I recall correctly that after the plague, there was no one left to take care of the work except for the lords and ladies. That's a generalization, but year. A disaster, a plague, etc. usually does the trick.

In the grand scheme of things they're at the top of a house of cards. I can't help but think of Ms. Bitters' lecture from Invader Zim. But I'd switch out the weight of children to the weight of ultra wealthy.
