What's boot on the head in reference to? I've always heard this approach as the "Queen's Duck" where the animator added a small duck to the Queen's animations in a Chess game for this purpose

On Saints Row we had a debug npc named Skinballs (lol) that was literally just four spheres wrapped in different shades of skin texture so we could test lighting for different skin tones during development. But teams need to plan for that kind of testing with intentionality, and not enough do.

This will only be bad. I was confused by nonsense text in a Weird Al video and didn’t even realize it could be non-intentional and just upscaling.
The YouTube version of Weird Al’s UHF video has a business name obscured with some distracting (artificial?) digital effect. I pulled out my rip of the video from DVD and you can barely make it out—Thomas somebody? Somebody with lawyers, I guess.

GOG actually offers something Steam doesn't in fully offline DRM-free games, that's the only way to compete - either offer something new or else you have to build a better experience in every way!

I recently read a really excellent book about how NZ used to send artists to Antarctica every year or so just as kind of an experiment, all different kinds of artists- writers, painters, dancers, sculptors... So cool

My graduate diploma (15 yrs ago) was in game programming, not design, but I've pivoted back and forth between programming and design roles. You will need to be self motivated and have an internal drive and passion for game design either way, there is a lot of competition!

The most important thing you need to have done to be hired as a game designer is to have designed games. If a course will get more finished(!) projects under your belt than you would just working on your own projects, game jams, etc., then it could be worth it.

How the hell do we dig ourselves up out of this hole and convince people to spend reasonable money on good software for phones again? I think the popular games like Balatro etc. having full "premium" mobile ports at least helps steer the ship in the right direction.

Now, people, when faced with spending $15 on phone software, would rather put up with ads, subscriptions, gambling mechanics etc as long as the up front cost is low, even though they'd happily spend that much up front on PC or console software. So the blame is partially on them too.
