I'm planning three MCs, all friends but with underlying resentments. I like the '3' dynamic as alliances will always be unbalanced. I'm thinking probably two POV MCs, each with a differering take on what's going on with the third character.

By showing fear in real time, and the debilitating effect it has on people, especially the MC who suffers from undiagnosed PTSD. He's a tough guy on the outside, but inside he's often a terrified mess.

The story was inspired by a real place - Branscombe Bay in Devon. We drove in one year and every house had a scarecrow figure outside. Scarecrow festivals are a thing, but have no basis in pagan traditions. I thought, "but what if they do...?"

There's nothing scary in the sense you mean, but writing decent descriptions and action/fight scenes scare me because they're so bloody difficult to write and editing them afterwards takes forever. I don't enjoy it.

My WIP is influenced by my favourite film, The Wicker Man, itself inspired by a novel called Ritual by David Pinner, (which I haven't read). The Swedish film Midsommar is another, albeit lesser influence. Sea shanties are the musical backdrop

It's a stretch of red sandstone coastline full of fossils. It's absolutely spectacular. This picture was taken during a boat trip along the coast from Exmouth to Ladram Bay, where we were staying.

The usual folk horror tropes - sinister goings on in a remote rural location, interfering outsiders, strange rituals, a sense of impending doom... but I plan to subvert these expectations. There will be creepy atmosphere and jump scares too.
