Some platform engineering dude, getting a little bit obsessed with his kilowatt hours!
Parked up at a hotel and every time I open my boot I am ambushed by swans and geese. Is this normal?!

In honour of my Twitter profile’s pinned tweet about people who like bitter coffee…

1 MWh in, 3.24 MWh out since our heat pump install. Toasty warm. Not quite at the 3.4 SCOP but most of the operation has been in February and March so we’ll see what it looks like in a year’s time.

The results of a full month of Solar + Heatpump are in! March 2025 cost £58.30 for electricity, heating and car fuel. If I had my MPAN set up, I probably would have only paid £33.57. Can't complain.

I love sunsets with clear skies around the equinoxes. I can’t put my finger on it but I just want to be sat out watching the light fade with a beer.

I’m in the nice situation today where I’ve got so much energy available that I can’t store it. So I turned on the dishwasher, the washing machine and mowed the lawn. An hour after finishing I have a full battery again. I may need to charge the car now 😀

I’m loving the sunshine right now…

Yesterday was a £0.04 / kWh kind of day. I can’t complain at that.

There we go! Too much energy to store now 😅
February 27, 2025 at 2:54 PM
It’s still February and I’ve basically filled my 10kWh battery with energy from sunlight. I think that justifies me expanding my capacity in future 😉

Probably the last electrification post for a while, but because our Solar panels have been commissioned today, it's the last day of data for the estimated savings from the heat pump alone. Obviously a lot of factors involved that might muck up the numbers but it looks like it is saving us money.

Batteries in, panels up, switched on and producing! My heating this afternoon is powered by sunlight (and whatever charged the batteries to 25% before they arrived).
February 25, 2025 at 3:58 PM
Panels are here, rails are up on the roof, batteries are being installed. Lots of progress today! I would be excited, but I’ve found out my EV charger is no longer compliant, due to poor wiring and CT clamp placement. There’s an unexpected cost! Looks like I need a MyEnergi Eddi.

And the work resumes, scaffolding now up for the solar panels!

Heat pump at full tilt (engineer test mode). Please excuse the silly “full powah” comment 😅. It’s quieter now, can’t hear it indoors at all, even though it’s 3°c outside. I’ll be interested to see what it’s like when it drops below freezing.

Day 4 of climbing up the EPC ratings, the heat pump has been wired up and plumbed in, the system filled with water and tested at full tilt. Now after 3 days with no heating (1-5°c outside), the house is slowly becoming nice and toasty again. Pausing now until end of February for Solar install!
January 30, 2025 at 5:34 PM
Day 3 of boosting our EPC rating, the heat pump is wired up and plumbed into the hot water cylinder. Still some lagging required externally and the heat pump controller isn’t yet wired up, but we’re close. Heating should be turned on tomorrow! 🎉
January 29, 2025 at 8:27 PM
Day 2 of upgrading our EPC rating and we’ve gained a cupboard! Not only that but we’re no longer burning fuel in our house. We’ve offloaded the burning responsibility to the grid, which over time should be getting greener. Heat pump not yet operational (PTC and jumpers tonight). Hot water is on!
January 28, 2025 at 4:51 PM
Day one of increasing our EPC rating and the Cosy 6 (Dalek) is wired up and on the plinth. The scaffolding is a little bit misplaced so no plumbing yet, hopefully this will be rectified soon so the system can be drained, the new cylinder installed and the gas boiler decommissioned.

Winter is here

So my front door lock is broken from the outside (I think there’s some dirt/debris locking a pin out of place). Totally not a good look to be using picks to test the pins are moving. No luck.
