An #asteroid passed just 300 km above Antarctica earlier today. It was not discovered until hours after close approach.

The SFU Trottier Observatory and Science Courtyard at night. The hatch is open on the observatory dome and the courtyard is lit up in the spectrum of the sun. A handful of shadowy people are standing around telescopes.

but uh. we always hope it IS aliens, because that would be cool.

remember: it's never aliens until it's Actually, Totally, Completely, 100%, "Yup, that's an alien," aliens.

honestly, our thoughts exactly. we love the moon! but uh. not when it's shining at close to its peak during one of the big observational astronomy events of the year. very annoying.

rest assured, we've filed a complaint with the moon itself.

also, bug deterrent. bring that. nobody likes mosquitoes - not even us.

as always: you want to make sure you spend a good 30 minutes out in the dark, letting your eyes adjust. hopefully, you're somewhere with skies as dark as possible! finally - remember to use your peripheral vision, your eyes are built to notice movement in the periphery, so take advantage of that!

reminder that the perseid meteor shower will peak over the next few nights. if not for the dastardly moon being close to full, this is usually the marquee meteor shower of the year - unfortunately, we're unable to do anything about the moon. we've tried. but we hope you'll still get out there!

coming up this thursday evening (July 31st)! join our LPA (Light Pollution Abatement) Chair, Leigh, at the Italian Cultural Centre in East Vancouver for a 7pm lecture on light pollution (it's bad) to help close out their *free* exhibition, "The Planets Within: A Fibre Cosmology"

details below⤵️

there's also some fun stuff that's coming up with the perseids coming around again, keep your eyes open because that information is dropping soon!

unfortunately, our speaker for tomorrow night's monthly lecture has come down with something and is unable to present. as such, we'll be postponing this month's talk, sorry for the inconvenience! rest assured, starry nights up at SFU will still be happening if/when possible!

!!!!! Waking up to the news that we might have found an interstellar object passing through our Solar System - only the third ever seen. Looks convincing based on the orbit.

For any asteroid observers who have not heard about it already:

Newly-discovered #A11pl3Z is a candidate interstellar object.
