I wanted a little cute treat before school tomorrow because I am Struggling in a big way but it is not to be.

the dummy in me has just figured one of them out with relative confidence

There are two women talking writerly stuff at this Westmere cafe and I’m not sure enough of who either of them are to say anything but they are talking about the Surrey residency and I just overheard a name of someone I know and I’m like 👀👀

Watched the match – first time of the RWC – courtesy of friends in the US screen sharing with me (because they get it as part of a regular old streaming service instead of the extortion of Sky Sport 🙃).

South Africa held their own pretty damn magnificently I have to say.

I realise that most power companies do monthly billing, but in the eight-ish years that I have handled bills and accounts for flats I’ve been in, I’ve been with Flick and it has always been weekly. Just glad I noticed I hadn’t been billed for a while before getting the inevitable horror month bill.

Pretty ridiculous that Flick gets bought by Meridian, and all the messaging is ‘don’t worry, you don’t have to do anything, it’s all sorted’ only to find (through having to email them to clarify) that ‘PSYCH we didn’t think to tell you that we do monthly billing only and that that could impact you’

Related: how *grim* is it that genuinely everything in my life that is making so so deeply sad in an ongoing inescapable fashion could be fixed if I just had money. Some money. A bit of money.

So I don't have any junior classes this year so I don't have regular library periods. But I'm relieving a Y9 class right now, and of the six books the librarian recommended, very delighted that it was @hannahmarsh.bsky.social 's 'It's A Bit More Complicated Than That' that got the most requests. 💚🧡

choral/singing thought: I have a chaotic idea of translating (realistically, collaborating on translating) Pōkarekare Ana or another wartime song into Ghari or another Guadalcanal language as like a melding of Aotearoa and Solomons WWII stuff. like… that’s a kind of cool idea right?

somebody save me from the hell of flatting and sitting in the lounge trying to work with some crimes on the TV only to have flatmate and one of their various people talking in the kitchen about god knows what (fluid bonding has been mentioned jesus christ know what is suitable for other ears)

The S for Southside hands are actually S for Saints Alive hands here btw.

Also I’m quite entertained by the headline below the photos given the all boys in one and all girls in the other nature of the photos 🤣

Dunedin, by the by, has been warmer than expected and full of closed store fronts. Admittedly I’ve largely only experienced the stretch of Princes St from our hotel to the Octagon, but still.

Choir has been SMASHING it - and one of two pics about the Big Sing in the ODT today was our girls!
photo of a page of broadsheet newspaper. unrelated articles surround two photos of students from secondary schools choirs. top photo is of six boys in Westlake Boys High School uniform (green blazers and red ties, leshgo Christmas) and bottom photo is of 20-ish girls from ST CUTHBERT’S VERY OWN SAINTS ALIVE in their green choir shirts and various jackets and scarves on top because Aucklanders. They are all throwing S-shapes with their hands.

What absolute proverbial-for-brains decided that Big Sing Finale and Tournament Week should both be held this week, a key time of year for senior students and one that is also ripe with winter illness??

Feel bad that I’m part of the pressure on our relief needs with helping supervise at Finale.

Just finished the last vahega of my 10-week Vagahau Niue class with CPL and it's been so lovely having a bit of that beautiful corner of the Pacific every week. And now I've got a bit of Niuean under my belt for whenever I finally head over there after a lifetime of stories.

And just some other good stuff from the tramp. #Tanekaha
looking along a tramping path through native trees, a creek/river/stream/whatever to the left Looking out across an incredibly verdant valley, with a rainbow cutting through grey skies. View from a hilltop clearing across the water to the Hen and Chicken Islands. Trig in a clearing, mates behind, Mangawhai and the ocean much further beyond.

Waterfalls of the tramp. #Tanekaha
Big mossy rock in the foreground to the left, waterfall in the background. Waterfall through the bush into a wee river. Waterrall from slightly further away, bush surrounding and grey skies above. Mid point of one of the waterfalls, person standing hands on hips, back to the camera at the edge of the pool. Surrounded by bush.
