They named the Streisand Effect after me.
In the opening of Alien: Covenant there's a lot of screaming and crying and people we don't know dying which is presented as tragic but we have no investment in it.

BUT THEN it turns out that the dead guy was James Franco! Bullet dodged!

Next: Covenant. Is there going to be an actual Covenant in this? It's not like there was any Requi-ing in AvP Requiem, so...

Sigh.

1) Predator
2) Predators
3) Prey
4) Prometheus
5) Alien Vs Predator
6) Predator 2
7) Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem
8) The Predator

Deciding between Prometheus and AvP isn't easy. They both kinda suck, but for very different reasons. I guess Prometheus edges it for having actual ambition.

It works in Alien, as the crew aren't researchers, they don't want to be exploring, they've been forced to divert and they don't know what they're doing.

But here, it's like if an archaeologist started a dig and didn't think to bring a notebook.

Notably, the marines in Aliens are better prepared.

They encounter the Engineer base - an incredible discovery, possibly humanity's first contact with any sentient alien life - and rather than acknowledging this, they just plow ahead like they've got to be home in a week.

Why don't they run to the left or right?
Why don't they have a survey plan?

Incidentally, the rolling donut of doom isn't a problem, but it is indicative of a big one - nobody acts in a believable way. The scientists just rush out of the car at the start and begin running around like lunatics - fine if they were in a hurry, but there's absolutey no pressure here.

Moreover, there's just too many story elements here. There's the exploration of humanity's origins, the humans betraying each other, the scary monster times and the Engineers themselves.

With so many moving parts, it's too easy to lose sight of what matters. I'm not sure any of it does.

In fact, the only times this DOESN'T happen are the auto-surgery scene (ick) and the infamous donut of death scene. So on the few occasions you're able to really focus and follow the action... you'd rather you didn't.

But then, it drowns out its own arguments and messages with far too many other things all happening at once. Sometimes literally - almost every action scene is an intentionally chaotic sequence where so many things overlap you're struggling to cope with it all.

Prometheus then.

Oddly enough, while it's obviously a far superor film, a lot of the same criticisms I had on The Predator apply here. Actions don't follow logically from each other, characters don't act like people, etc.

UNLIKE The Predator, it at least has something to say.

So. Rankings so far, having reached the end of the Predator movies:

1) Predator
2) Predators
3) Prey
4) Alien Vs Predator
5) Predator 2
6) Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem
7) The Predator

Ugh. I'd say I need a cleanse, but next up is Prometheus. We're going to the future!

But the cherry on top is the autistic child. The script seems to think that autism = magical genius powers, suggesting the research stopped at a crib sheet for Rain Man and went no further.

It's gross, offensive and stupid. I will probably never watch this again in my life.

The final act has a sequence where since Predating happens in the woods, but it's entirely tacked-on and serves no purpose but to thin out the cast ready for the ending.

And then there's the mental health angle. Depression, PTSD, Tourettes and more appear, none of them portrayed well.
November 18, 2025 at 8:41 PM
My theory is that most of the script was originally not intended to be a Predator film, but retrofitted to become one. Apart from the look of the baddies and their gimmicks, there's nothing particularly pred-like about the story.

Okay. Reached the end. Not sure what else to say, except to reiterate: this is possibly the most incompetent film I think I've seen.

No action or line follows on from another. Characters give exposition they can't possibly know. Nothing makes sense, nobody acts like a person.

I almost admire this film for its absolute ineptitude.

Almost.

Because there's its treatment of mental health, autism in particular, and it's utterly reprehensible.
