Excited to *really* start working on the SOCIOVOTE project with these brilliant researchers! During the next four years @vojtechpohanka.bsky.social, @wannesdemeyer.bsky.social and I will be collecting lots of data to improve our understanding of the role of social groups in politics!

🥹 Finally, we presented this paper, in different stages, at *lots* of different places. Thanks so much for everyone who gave us comments and suggestions!

‼️We find stronger effects for deservingness. Among in- & out-groups, those who think the group is more deserving strongly reward a candidate appealing to that group. Those who think the group already gets more than it deserves, in contrast, evaluate candidates appealing to the group more negatively.
October 6, 2025 at 9:47 AM
❗We do find that the positive effects of exposure to out-group appeals is significantly reduced among strong identifiers, but even they do not punish candidates using group appeals.
October 6, 2025 at 9:47 AM
🔍 We further expanded the N of groups we considered in Study 2, and across groups find that group appeals consistently polarize individuals across group lines.

🤯 Things were different for an appeal to young people, which young people did not respond positively to and older respondents reacted *negatively* to.

A great #EPSA2025 conference is in the books. Got to see amazing research, had great discussions, and met fantastic junior scholars. But the highlight was catching up with (former) members, visitors, and friends of the @sciencepo-udem.bsky.social Chair on Electoral Democracy!

Always a pleasure to come back to @eui-eu.bsky.social! Got great feedback at the CPSS seminar @eui-sps.bsky.social and was able to participate in a fantastic PhD defense on the rural-urban divide in Spain by Rebeca González Antuña. Bonus was being around during coppa once more! Forza Sanfelicians!

For example, in postcommunist countries we do *not* find a trend of increased left-right proximity voting over time (which would mean smaller left-right distances between voters and parties) ⤵️

Ready for the very first Montenegrin political science association conference!

Another research stay down under in the books. Thanks to #SPIR at ANU for being such a warm academic home for a research stay once more! And thanks to the Jeff Bleich Centre and Government team at Flinders Uni and folks at Victoria Uni Wellington for inviting me over for talks. Had an awesome month!

Also like in Canada, the right was leading in the polls a couple of months ago, but things started to change in January 2025. #Trumpeffect

After the Canadian election earlier this week, another win for a left-of-center incumbent in #Australia today.

Election Day truly is a celebration down in #Australia. Now waiting for results!

One of the main stories of the Canadian election is voters' coordination around Liberals and Conservatives. It's definitely a reversal of a trend.

Though one that probably won't last long...

The paper uses data which we collected back in June 2023, when we invited 100 citizens in the city of Longueuil for a weekend-long discussion on local electoral reform.

Our key finding is that regardless of how many votes participants won or lost, they're always satisfied with the assembly!

🗳️ Polls are open in Australia! 4 outsider observations, in 4 pictures:
1. You only notice there’s an election when you go to the polls, not a lot of posters anywhere else.
2. Candidates tell you exactly how to cast your vote.
3. Same, but really *exactly*.
4. Dogs are not allowed to vote.

With Australia and Canada, there were two leader debates on April 16. Great time for an election nerd! 🤓

Had a great time presenting joint work with Patrick Fournier and @zeynsom.bsky.social at MZES in Mannheim. Thanks for the invite, amazing feedback, and for arranging the nice weather 👌

In the coming months, I'll be recruiting two PhD students to work with me as part of the Voting & Democracy research group at @kuleuvenuniversity.bsky.social. So watch this space if you want to join the team and work on this lovely campus!

Again, the results are in line with expectations, showing young voters are more likely to vote for the left when these parties take progressive sociocultural positions.
