Trump low-balled the Ralph C. Wilson family on his bid to buy the Buffalo Bills in 2014, after the death of the founder of the Bills and one of the original AFL owners. In 2014, the NFL ownership group had an institutional memory of the thuggishness of Trump and sought to keep him out of the club.

Roger Goodell, who has family ties to Western New York, helped to recruit Terry Pegula, who already owned the Buffalo Sabres NHL franchise, to bid $1.4 billion to purchase the Bills. Trump's bid was $1.2 billion. Arguably, Pegula overpaid for what the franchise was worth then.
