Anyone in skyland have a negative school library experience from childhood? I'd love to hear what didn't work for people to reflect on my own practice and try to do better in 2025. So many people love us- who can report a PERSONAL student experience that wasn't so great? #tlchat 📚 #schoollibraries

I just checked out a copy from the library yesterday! It's not christmas without it!

Sigh. So are community members also writing school curriculum? Mapping out roads for townships? Designing public buildings like courthouses? Or is that somehow different in your mind?

Parents and/or community deciding isn't feasible in 99% of libraries. That's why we have experts in fields- to trust in the knowledge and training they have. Being a librarian is being an expert in resource curation and is a lot more work than most people realize. We love purchase suggestions tho!

In a perfect world- licensed school librarians decide. That's what they're trained to do. They have teaching degrees plus the equivalent of/and an MLIS degree. They make sure selections fit in with the collection development policy, there's budget $, purchases support the curriculum, and so forth.

It's fun to use those comments to build up my block list!

Since that seems to be an honest question, I'll respond. There's a big difference between selection and censorship. This law doesn't mean nothing can ever be removed from a library (if it functions like the IL law does).

I had to bow out last minute today so I can't wait to see what is shared from this event!

I hate that the state looks at attendance as a metric of how well a school performs. Some kids just don't thrive in this environment, there's illness, mental health, etc. We are forced to waste so much time and money trying to convince kids to COME to school instead of meeting them where they are.

you (the patron) should be able to turn that if the circ system is set up properly. Most libraries I'm familiar with delete records on return so that even with a subpoena, there is nothing to provide. Interesting yours has chosen not to do so. Don't mislead people into "all libraries do this."

Yes. I have those three plus other works on different beliefs in my HS library. But the various school boards don't think of that (and probably have also let go their trained and licensed librarians). 📚

The graphic novel version of Wait Til Helen Comes is a huge hit in my HS library!
