We have a perfect storm of problems at the moment for education. A curriculum that is so exam driven. The Arts being pummelled and under valued and squeezed out. Lack of money for SEND. Children 's services stripped bare. And POVERTY!!! Inequality is screaming at us.

For years I never took my lunch break, when you work remotely there can feel like an extra pressure to prove your worth. I take my lunch break now and I am loving it!

Lovely client feedback this week. It has been a whirlwind few months taking my design business full-time but it has been brilliant to be doing what I love and to feel valued for the skills that I have. Should have done it years ago!

Started painting again! Kicking it off with some little 15cm x 15cm abstract canvases. No idea where I'm going with these yet, but feels good to have a paintbrush in my hand again.

Who is working today? Each week, I allocate an hour to work on Hello Lovely. It might be a desk tidy, desktop tidy, investigating a new system, or writing a blog post. Over Christmas, it is quiet on client work, so this is a longer period of focus for me. Spoiler below. #designer

Absolutely forswunk.
Word of the day is ‘forswunk’ (13th century): exhausted by work.

I like to add ‘foreswunk’, exhausted before you even begin.

Right now every parent needs every teacher who knows and feels the damage this approach to education is doing, to step up and call it out, now.
A teacher briefing on Y6 transition day: “We were told, if there was ever an opportunity, could we shout at the children and make them cry, so they felt frightened and intimidated ahead of starting in Sept.” These kids were 10. In a strange school. “Healthy” fear? www.theguardian.com/education/20...

This is important, for designers as well as authors. As a designer I always audit the imagery I use, whether it is provided to me or I have sourced/created it, to make sure that it reflects the realities and diversities of the society we live in.
🔊 Our 7th annual #ReflectingRealities report is out now! This year’s report shows a significant drop in the presence of racially minoritised characters in books published for children in 2023 in the UK.

I wrote about the way the SEND crisis is quietly unpicking women's lives - destroying careers, dismantling relationships, damaging physical and mental health.

And all this goes on unacknowledged.
