Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.

Pushed myself to do some cleaning today. Sometimes you get a lot done if you just make yourself do that first task

I also just think short form posts do not really allow you to state your argument and you end up with people assuming your opinion in bad faith

Yesss absolutely— it’s not just what you say, but it’s how you say it. We’re here to have fun, and there are so many other things that deserve more critical energy!

Not even in a negative way to be clear—I just know what I do and don’t like, and I don’t feel like putting them out there all the time to then have to justify myself to others

Think if the Weird West met Hollow Knight and you've got an idea of what this oneoff is about.
For a former planestrider and bounty hunter, a lonesome life of isolation was the one constant. It was something that Tobias Bell had accepted, just has he had accepted the everpresent threat of death that came with it. Yet, if it was to be a short life, at least it would be a full one as he looked at the colorful sight before him, a giant forest, with trees that reached the heavens, air far fresher than the arid plateaus of dust he had grown up in.

If only to take in the moment, the man lowered his cloth mask to breathe deep. The air hospitable, rich with the scent of greenery. There was life there, something he did not often savor. He might as well while he had the chance. After taking a moment, he listened. Wind. A light rustle of leaves...buzzing. That noise made him reach to his hip for but a moment in anticipation. The metal arm of the lone strider’s gears ready for a stress test if needed, but at the moment it wasn’t so.

A small, near imperceptible sigh escaped him as he became aware of his age. He hadn’t expected to live into his forties, and given some of the aches he had accumulated over the years, he wondered if his fifties would be a gift or just more hardship still. Even so, he had to focus on getting there first. As he unfolded the bountyprint he carried, he saw the picture of his target, an insectoid (thri-kreen, his former commander had called them?) named Grav.

The strange creature resembled a locust, tall, but strong. Far stronger than a human like Bell, even with his Mechanisms. The same was true of most Insectoids, but during the Conflict of Planes, the Insectoids were never a major rival to humans. He began to wonder what led Grav to this place. Surely he wasn’t from here? Then again, as was often the case, he was a stranger in another’s home. What was fact was mere guesswork to him.

Continuing on his path, he eventually came past the giant blades of grass and towering trees to a patch of flowers. From the trod ground and circle of stones … Bell could feel the tension in the air, the gears in his mind turning as he tried to break it. Taking his hat from the ground he placed it back on his head, adjusting the brim while his mechanical hand moved into place. “Well, that’s no way to treat a lost traveler.”

“You’re no lost traveler, and we’ve had enough invaders!” said the woman.

“Not here to cause trouble. Maybe I oughta introduce myself. I’m Tobias Bell, a bounty hunter,” he said before taking off his hat. He hoped the gesture would mask his motioning toward his belt. “And who do I have the pleasure of talking with?”

“Princess Mat’Rya of the Petaldew Hive,” she said. “By the authority gifted to me by the queen-mother, I command you to surrender yourself for questioning.”

“Sorry, princess, I think I rather get about my business and out of your antenna. If you’d allow me.”

Mat’Rya narrowed her eyes. “Perhaps ‘command’ means something in your plane?”

“Well, I never was good was orders.” In a flash, Bell grabbed a single orb of glass, within was contained a swirling mass of smoke. For a moment its surface shone before Mat’Rya struck with one of her weapons, only for the smoky cloud to burst outward and then obscured all around them.

Bell could hear her coughing, interspersed with the clink of metal as he dropped several caltrops. It was a delaying measure while he turned and his Mechan arm geared up. A burst of steam made the smoke around the masked man dissipate a brief moment before the hand on the arm shot out, a chainlink going with it before the hand grasped one of the flower stems. He was soon pulled up as his organic hand reached for the holster at his side, knowing it would be better to have it on hand.

As he landed on the stem, feeling it bob for a moment but sustain his weight, he let his arm reorient itself before he tried to swing again, but he heard the sound of buzzing as Mat’Rya flew, the cloud of smoke left behind as she flew up towards, her wings flitting as she ascended.

Having tho… Mat’Rya was caught by surprise at the exchange, her first rapier knocking the firearm from Bell’s hand, only for her other to be caught by Bell’s Mechan limb, which tightened its grip until her rosewood rapier was destroyed. She was down to one sword as he managed to wrestle away her broken weapon, but as she pulled back to stab him she heard a click as a blade came out of his forearm to meet her weapon. “What manner of tool is this?”

“The Mechan fellas do wonders. That Switch Arm Knife ain’t nothin’ to sneeze at,” Bell said as his platinum hued weapon glimmered.

“Noted.” In a swift swoop, her arms shot out, one grabbing his wrist before her lower arms picked him up by the front of his shirt, her last hand holding the rapier as she pointed it at his body. “Now, this is over.”

Bell tried to struggle, but even if his prosthetic could challenge her a little, she had him dead to rights. Finally, he sighed. “Alright, you got me.”

“Quite so. Now, then, tell me what ‘bounty’ you are supposedly seeking. Be quick.”

“Well, ma’am, it’s a fella named Grav. He’s an Insectoid like yourself.”

There was an angry buzzing from Mat’Rya as she glowered at him. “He is nothing like me. At all. Nor are his brethren in the Wings of Woe.”

“’Wings of Woe’?”

“The Lokasta rogues, forty strong including Grav. Exiles of their plane who literally eat at my own realm,” she said, gesturing to the ravaged flowers. “They are unwelcome here.”

“Lokasta...Right.” Bell looked at her. “Well, if ya want I could help ya be rid of ‘em. I was hired to take in Grav, but if his boys’re trouble too I’m sure there might be an extra bounty or two I can scrounge from ‘em. Means they’ll be taken to another plane after they’re taken down and hogtied.”

Mat’Rya stared at Bell, her antenna moving and her eyes darting as she thought, before her buzzing wings slowed and she lowered her rapier, and placed Bell down. She waited for him to retract his armblade before she released his hand. “You’ve proven yoursel…
