Really happy to see this out! We synthesize graphene nanoribbons with zigzag edges and embedded porphyrins—creating a hybrid π–d electron system. While it may have some cool applications, I just can't get over how beautiful this molecule is. Look at the lateral strain Modulation!

Zigzag graphene nanoribbons with periodic porphyrin edge extensions
Nature Chemistry - Graphene nanoribbons with zigzag edges are key candidates for spintronic applications due to their tunable bandgaps and spin-polarized edge states. Now it has been shown that...

"Quantum Lego": We engineered spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains by linking Olympicene nanographenes, unveiling their length-dependent spin excitations. With STM/IETS, we confirm gapless behavior in the thermodynamic limit & visualize spinon standing waves.

Today our paper "Spin excitations in nanographene-based antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains" has been published in Nature Materials. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

This is a collaboration with the groups of @rfasel.bsky.social at EMPA, Xingliang Feng at MPI and TUD, and my group at INL.
Spin excitations in nanographene-based antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains - Nature Materials
Open-shell nanographenes are used to fabricate length-controlled antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains. It is revealed that the spin excitation spectra evolve from gapped to gapless following a...

In our latest work, we show a sub-exponential increase in charge-state lifetime of Se vacancies in WSe₂, from picoseconds in monolayers to nanoseconds in multilayers. Great collaboration with @pennstatematse.bsky.social !
