This whole thread, up and down, is just crazy. And sad.

At this point, our intro comp/first-year English course has been so heavily revised, it no longer includes a novel, or "extended reading" of any kind, no "specialized" or "historical" reading, mostly in-class assignments, no research essay...and we are still seeing a 40-50% rate of AI misconduct.

I would welcome the fall of the Maduro regime, with all my heart. But the way Trump, Rubio, Hegseth, et al are going about it is turning the U.S. Navy into pirates on the high seas.

When it gets really cold bluebirds roost together in a pile using collective body heat to help them survive. They arrange themselves so they don’t smother & alternate positions within the pile. Trump has never once in his life extemporaneously used the phrase "western civilization." He was once asked about western liberalism and thought they were talking about California Democrats. One of the more blatant tells for a Miller-written screed.
Trump: “I will permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries … denaturalize migrants who undermine domestic tranquility, and deport any Foreign National who is a public charge, security risk, or non-compatible with Western Civilization.“

OUCH
We are now further away from the theatrical release of Raiders of the Lost Ark (June 12, 1981) than it was from the year it takes place in (1936). We have reached the Indiana Jones event horizon.

The failure to prepare in advance for the vetting and evacuation of Afghan allies when they knew they were negotiating an imminent withdrawal was a failure of the first Trump Administration, before it left office.

I was gonna say "Frazetta would approve of those cakes"...and then I noticed the cut-off signature stage left. 😆
“Lost Planet of the Gods”, two part episode began on 24 September and ended 1 October 1978.

This right here is world championship level passive-aggressiveness.
My grandma "accidentally" set the oven to clean when my mom (her daughter) was making her "famous" meatloaf and we were forced to go out to eat instead.

Years later I asked her if she did it on purpose and she said "You've had your mother's cooking. What do you think"
yes, hello, I would like to place an order for everyone’s funniest stories of holiday food-related family grudges / drama / chaotic incidents / lore

I feel like we need this

“Clear and present danger” hasn’t been the test for almost 60 years.

The test is “intended to and likely to produce imminent lawless action”.

No, that pathetic immoral crowd never will.
The fascist right will never drop its anti-Ukraine stance, because they want to see Russian aggression succeed.

But can the smaller yet quite vocal anti-anti-Russia left—Chomsky, Quincy Institute, Lula, etc—finally admit that blaming the war on the US and “they won’t even negotiate” were misguided?

which doesn't mean that people are wrong to avoid the things that they're allergic to! but a lot of Internet advice is like screaming at everybody to run away from a field of ragweed because you personally have hayfever

A lot of people use the word "toxic" when the right metaphor is really "allergenic". Ascribing universal harm to something that actually only has negative effects on certain people.
