So even with Shake/Stir I get ravaged by #spam calls. 90% of all calls are spam. S/T dropped the frequency from every day to every week or two. But still. (I don’t do much #voice calling.). But today I got a call that was #spoofing a number in (get this) Locust, NC. Dude. Too on the nose there.

There is literally nothing you can ever do other than check the box in your own mind: "Can no longer trust OUP." And likewise every other publisher producing specious apologetics in the guise of academics. Each thing it publishes now has to be independently vetted just as if it were self-published.

This is the post-truth era. Reputations no longer rest on actual epistemic quality but entirely on rhetoric, wealth, and prestige. No one will admit or take seriously that OUP conned the public by publishing a sham study. Why? For the circular argument that they never would. Evidence is irrelevant.

Indeed because they sold millions of units in English. And probably then hundreds of thousands in Portuguese. This is a privilege of the privileged. 99.99% of authors don't have that.

Indeed. This proves it's a captured field. Christian apologists run even OUP, even if they are not literally staffing it. But that's only possible when OUP's staff is running its operation for profit or mission and not actually interested in real quality control.

Like an adult talking to a child. Only, in a judicial ruling in a court of law.

That's what I said. The publisher owns those rights already. So I can't just do it. It has to be them doing it, or another publisher who negotiates with them a subsidiary rights contract (even if that's me), & they won't approve contracts for translations they haven't vetted, & vetting is expensive.

And for none of which will I ever really be paid. Because foreign language sales will always be trivial. It's really a massive charity operation. Which I cannot afford to divert so much time to. As I have to fill my hours with work that earns a living. I may find some time someday. But not soon.

And that's just for those publishers. The books I own myself (about half my books) I don't need the subsidiary rights contract for, but I still am facing a week of labor in proofing, formatting, layout, and backend building and settings, and establishing foreign distribution.

I don't think you understand how contract rights work. I have contracts with my existing publishers. I cannot publish translations without their permission and involvement, requiring a subsidiary rights contract. And they don't accept translations they did not vet. And vetting is expensive.

It's worse than overstated. It's a sham argument top to bottom. Possibly he's just delusional and doesn't know he's lying to himself. But the alternative is that he's lying to us. It's essentially a bogus study, engineered to look real.
