The origins of soccer do go back a long way though not as far as the middle ages. It was definitely kicking a 'ball' – it wasn't until the mid-C19 when William Webb-Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it while at Rugby School that the game divided. Presumably US football is related to rugby?
