thanks for asking. so, kerning is adjusted spacing between letter pairs. it keeps the text from having gaps. you can see this in letter pairs like AVATAR or Tool. if you compare how close the other letters are placed AV, TA, To, or just the placement of comma, they are too far apart.

But indeed, there is an uppercase version (ẞ) since 2017 that has seen more use since 2024. I notice it in more and more advertisements around town.
