For me, 007 movies are that rare beast where I want my expectations fulfilled, not subverted.

Alt: Gif of a scene from The Spy Who Loved Me. Roger Moore's James Bond is sat in his stationary submersible Lotus Esprit. He looks at the camera out of his door and says "have I ever let you down?" before looking forward out of the windscreen and changing gear.

GoldenEye was on TV last night & I watched from Bond & Onatopp's sexy car duel (oh 007 movies, please be like this again) & Éric Serra's techno compositions aren't half as significant or invasive as my head had built up to be, so I need to go & give it a proper rewatch & reappraisal. Banging film.

Yeah, I really like those 2. I thought Skyfall was especially excellent for the 50th. They're incompatible with the 'prime' Bond universe imo though. Try as I might, I can't find places for them that work. Even mentally chopped them up so different parts take place between different films!

And the Craig ones, for me, are in their own separate timeline & seem to try hard not to be Bond films & change the character a great deal, so I don't see them as 'typical' Bond films. They're 'Ultimate Bond' to me.

GoldenEye is an all time classic game, absolutely. Funnily enough I don't see FRWL as a typical 007 film myself, more of a straight down the line cold war spy thriller. I see the next movie, Goldfinger, as the template for typical 007 films.

I think the consensus is with you there. The music is a huge element for me though and that significantly industrial techno soundtrack honestly makes it a difficult watch. It's my inability to cope though, not the film's fault.

I still really like those, myself. Even Die Another Day for being a proper OTT laser satellite, outrageous villain lair, cartoony henchman, bonkers gadget car throwback. I get why people don't like it, but there's worse offenders, for me. Hovercraft chase is a favourite sequence.

Alt: James Bond in Die Another Day. His car is upside down sliding on the ice. He fires the ejector seat which flops the car the right way up, also causing it to jump over a missile fired by another car.
