I think the framework of statistical discrimination would be easily deployed here: surnames can be useful shorthands for people who think ethnicity is related to competence, so a name change is a way to exploit the ignorance of statisticaldiscriminators.

While I understand the impulse, I think this is a stretch. While there are some interesting explorations by economists to study discrimination, broadly, the very category of statistical discrimination serves to skirt this critique
