than an aid to individual freedom. We've been debating that problem ever since. The point of "neoliberalism" being coined was that promoting market freedom was no longer the same as promoting personal freedom. It's been a problem ever since - neoliberals still want to call themselves "liberal". 3/3

(far too limited by state and church interference). I think our problem today is that many people still feel individual and market freedom are irretrievably intertwined. But, notably with globalisation, markets became more and more powerful, to the point where they were more of a threat 2/3

I think this is a really complex area with a long history. Liberalism as a concept was shaped in the nineteenth century when it made sense to link the freedom of the individual (from the overweening powers of the state and the church) to freedom of the markets 1/3

So can I suggest "markets are never equal" as a starting point. I think you can get an awful long way from that.

"surprisingly" is not the word I would be using there.

It is policy now. But current policy and its presentation has to grapple with the fact that rejoining is years away even if we started the process today. And there are lots of good arguments for not doing that, not least that we have made ourselves untrustworthy and we have to rebuild trust first.

actually rejoining is LibDem policy.
