Always been an Atlanticist and never thought I'd say this. But we have US troops in the UK due to our commitment to mutual defence. As the US has functionally repudiated our alliance, can they get the fuck out. We're too weak to make them, but then again their commander is too cowardly to use them.

This story reminds me of Condorcet (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marquis...) who was allegedly caught during the Terror when, at an inn disguised as a peasant, he inadvertently revealed his noble background by ordering an omelette and saying he wanted it made with 12 eggs.
You could never do this post today, no one has access to that many eggs

Why is nobody talking about this?

Of course it is correct that Grenfell tower, which I pass regularly, needs to be demolished. But it is very unfortunate that with unlimited time to prepare the authorities have clearly managed to communicate this sensitive matter in a crass, clumsy way and further upset families.

One of the relatively accurate positives that can be said about Trump's first presidency is that he was pacific and didn't start wars. Trump 2, in contrast, seems to think he's Lord Palmerston. (Though Palmerston might not have fancied Greenland and Gaza, but times change...)

Hilarious thing is that even in the comments on the FT, where you might have thought there'd be some sympathy with OpenAI's complaints, there is basically none and most comments are making this same point about absurd hypocrisy.
This is such a funny complaint from them lmao

Following a perusal of the fantastically depressing news this morning on my way to work, I was cheered to see that at least this horse/AT-AT walker is happy
A man in Indiana made an AT-AT costume for his horse, intending to only get a few pictures before removing it. When he took off the headpiece the horse got upset and insisted that he put it back on, which made the horse happy again. Now the horse isn't allowing him to remove any piece of the costume

The political situation in France is yet another depressing thing going on, made worse (here in the UK) by the ill-concealed glee with which various fools regard political & economic turmoil in one of our closest allies & trading partners. This isn't good for anyone (well, maybe Le Pen, & Putin)

Hey just in case anyone else like me is a punter who spends too much money on expensive philosophy books, there seem to be some deals on Kindle books atm. I just bought 2 books about Hegel by Robert Pippin each was which was ~£3 down from ~£30... I'd prefer the paperback but beggars and choosers...
