⚡️Solar storm incoming! We are actively monitoring severe space weather events, occurring on 11-12 November. Severely disturbed geomagnetic conditions are expected to persist for at least 24 to 48 hours.

I wrote this article! 🙂

This is IMO one of the biggest discoveries of the year, but you haven’t heard about it bc of a NASA press release/embargo stuck bc of the shutdown. I however have no such constraint (we’re tracking it in radio but haven’t finished the paper) so got to write about it! 🔭🧪

general intelligence is linked to agency, which is linked to wanting things, but what is wanting linked to? in all cases we're familiar with, ultimately to pain—to a sensuously unpleasant want of food, water, warmth, etc. want to build a computer that can think? try building one that can suffer.
How Organisms Come to Know the World: Fundamental Limits on Artificial General Intelligence

This Firefox AI summaries thing is so annoying. I don't need link previews on a desktop browser, and even if I do, I certainly don't want a goddam AI summary of it.

Disabled it by setting browser.ml.linkPreview.enabled and browser.ml.enable to false in about:config.

Artist You Might Not Know About: Briton Rivière.

He's a British artist, widely known for his beautiful paintings of animal/human interactions.

I especially like his sentimental depictions of loyal dogs and their owners.

Whoa.

That's a sprite, an elusive, high-altitude electrical discharge from a thundercloud photographed by NASA astronaut Nichole Ayers from the ISS earlier today.

With reported sightings going back more than a century, this phenomenon was first photographed in 1989.
