On August 21st, 1979, Robert Pinsky's second collection of poetry, An Explanation of America, was published by Princeton University Press.

The New York Times Book Review called it "[an] ambitious and immensely likeable long poem . . . a poem which - a rare thing - seems to combine intimacy
