i admire ppl for whom anniversaries are not a huge deal... today marks exactly 3 years w/out my grandpa and exactly 8 months w/out my grandma (and inexactly 17 years w/out my mom) and i'm feeling the grief in my bones

There are so many people living lives of quiet dignity despite horrific medical news or poverty or tragedy where every day they still wake up and try to be good people in the world even as the world pushes against them and it makes me even angrier at the absolute shitheads that rule over things

i'm not being melodramatic when i say that during the past 7 years of status migraine, there have been moments in which i'm glad i don't own a firearm
you can be the most reasonable, intelligent, measured person on the planet and 3 minutes of a migraine will have you looking longingly at a drill and considering whether trepanning was honestly that bad of an idea

my undergrad work-study job was in ILL and it ruled
A couple weeks ago we got a lovely note from someone on the other side of the country thanking us profusely for ILLing a book to them. Curious, we looked up the book they borrowed.

It would have cost $1,200 for them to purchase it.

ILL is one of the things I love most about libraries.
Requested a book through ILL over break. It arrived today. Libraries man.

a few years ago i got summer research funding (aka didn't have to teach/work a side gig) and i did pretty much the same stuff i was already doing (repro counseling/abortion funding, writing my lil research articles & music criticism) but without the constant suffocating sense of precarity

i'm sure others have said this, but for PhD students it is the perennial "how much longer do you have left?"
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

If anyone is curious about the current list of search terms being used by right wing activist organizations to harass university professors, here's a public records request I received today from Mike Howell of the Heritage Foundation. Not intimidating or meant to curtail by my speech at all, right?
