ah alright, what kind of settings are there on your hdmi to av thingy? it could very well be outputting pal (maybe pal60, since your tv isn't freaking out), secam (unlikely), or some other incompatible thing (like ntsc443)

it "only outputting black and white" could just be your TV can't handle this type of colour? I don't know where the TV was sold but I would guess you're probably putting 640x480 into the adapter and the TV is European? if so try the thing that's somethingx576

People are too interested in VHS to see too much of that - not that I'm complaining, it'll keep DVDs cheap

I enjoy the benefits I get from being able to use technology to do things, though I agree they shouldn't be a requirement
