They should at least give me the opportunity to debate Mengu.

I'll be honest, gamers, I'm getting smooshed. But every vote counts and voting is open until Monday!

Gamers- I need your help! Back in 2019 my Grixis Cube was featured on Magic Online as a Spotlight Cube, and ever since then I've always wanted to update the Cube for another run based off of what I learned from that experience and about Cube broadly since then- and now might be my chance!

The 2019 run was at a high-power unpowered power level that I think really constrained the design. The updated list removes stuff like Storm and Reanimator decks to give a broader range of archetypes and synergies more breathing room, and opens up space for some faves like Nicol Bolas, the Ravager!

You should vote for the Cube you most want to see of course, but I'm hoping that it's mine! Here's a link to the Cube Cobra page to help inform your decision:

You know, maybe Ball Lightning is actually the best use of haste.
ryanoverdrive.bsky.social
Thundermaw Hellkite is definitely a contender for me for haste. It's just unambiguously about smashing face, and I like haste as an instruction more than an option. I'm a huge Charging Monstrosaur fan in much the same way. Hulking Bugbear is more "you block sometimes" but I am a fan of it, too.

Haste (This creature can attack and {T} as soon as it comes under your control.)

When this creature enters, it deals 1 damage to each creature with flying your opponents control. Tap those creatures.

Trample, haste

Bugbears move with surprising speed for their size and bulk, a fact that has led to the demise of many unwary adventurers.

My answer for lifelink and deathtouch. It's difficult to consider this card without the context of flying, and I'd say it's at least an honorable mention in that category, too.

Deathtouch (Any amount of damage this deals to a creature is enough to destroy it.)

Lifelink (Damage dealt by this creature also causes you to gain that much life.)

This thread is absolutely delightful.

A life update: this wound up paying off. I'm still applying to several jobs that are hopefully careers, but I've got my survival needs covered by a job at the airport that I'm apparently pretty good at.

And instead of being in an office alone, which was driving me mad, I see 20k people a day.

There is a line around this building to get to the line entrance to wait to get into this job fair.

At the airport. For airport jobs.

Christopher Moeller uses darker and more sinister shading in the art for the Innistrad reprint, which combine with a new flavor text to communicate loudly that Mulch is all about burying bodies. Finding lands did prove useful in casting and flashing back Spider Spawning though!
ryanoverdrive.bsky.social
Tempest block had some all-timers for graveyard recursion, with both Recurring Nightmare and the iconic Reanimate showing up in the block, so in practice Mulch has always been about hoping to mill the right spells, but you could buy into the hope of drawing two or more lands with it.
ryanoverdrive.bsky.social
Continuing my celebration of Spooky Month, I want to talk about how Innistrad really effectively utilized reprints in its world-building. Take Mulch for example. Originally from Stronghold, the Rebecca Guay art and hopeful flavor text could convince you that this card was about finding lands.

Reveal the top four cards of your library. Put all land cards revealed this way into your hand and the rest into your graveyard.

Hope is the one crop that can grow in any climate.

There's a lot to be said about Magic offering 30+ years of comfort and familiarity while simultaneously offering 30+ years of permutations yet unexplored.
ryanoverdrive.bsky.social
Nope! My 20+ card deck had been reduced to 0, as the Phantasm had shuffled itself to the bottom and milled my entire deck. "For value".

Even more amusingly, this anecdote is tremendously similar to my early experiences with Oath of Druids in Vintage Cube.

Enchantment

At the beginning of each player’s upkeep, that player chooses target player who controls more creatures than they do and is their opponent. The first player may reveal cards from the top of their library until they reveal a creature card. If the first player does, that player puts that card onto the battlefield and all other cards revealed this way into their graveyard.
ryanoverdrive.bsky.social
Well, I activated the ability, yielded priority through the turn, and Magic Online told me the game had ended... I spent a good minute trying to figure out what had happened. Had my opponent conceded? Mirror-Mad Phantasm is a strong card, after all.
ryanoverdrive.bsky.social
For all of the times that I drafted Innistrad, I have activated Mirror-Mad Phantasm's ability exactly once. I was playing on Magic Online, in a strong position, and decided to activate the ability for value, as I had some flashback spells in my deck and hoped to mill one or two with the ability.
ryanoverdrive.bsky.social
Even by today's standards, I don't think it's that hard to grasp a five power flyer being strong in Limited, and this was a high pick for its stats, evasion, ability to dodge removal, and for the ability to fill your graveyard- a central aspect of Innistrad's gameplay.
