They label us terrorists, but refuse to explain what the acts of terror are, or whom we're supposedly terrorizing. Because there are no real acts of terrorism, and there is no one we are terrorizing.

They've co-opted the very word "terrorist" as a weapon with which to terrorize us.

The fact the majority Palestinians are under are under 25 years old should in and of it self stand as proof of the horrors those ppl have endured. Justifying that via a violent regime those living were born into is just barbaric.
It was also the last election they had. Nineteen years ago. Since the coup, Hamas has ruled Gaza more like a mafia than any kind of Islamist theocracy. In short, voters got it wrong. I'm not sure if you can relate, but I have often voted for one thing and gotten another. Bait and switch is to some degree endemic to elections. And I haven't always felt duped. I have also recognized errors in judgment on my own part, calculations of what the best available vote was and why I considered it that. Hamas power in Gaza, especially over the past decade plus, has been due in part to Netanyahu facilitating their rule by transferring suitcases full of untraceable cash from Qatar, while impoverishing the citizenry with a stupid and draconian blockade of imports and exports creating desperate conditions fueling Hamas recruitment. In repressive authoritarian regimes, people are always drawn into and coopted by the ruling elite for their own material benefit and civic privilege. Like people in Soviet Russia tried to work their way up through the Communist Party for material and civic reasons. Since then, the Netanyahu regime has played a significant role in preventing reconciliation between the PA and Hamas for the explicit purpose of preventing elections and the pressure they would create for negotiations leading to international pressure to accept what might look like a viable Palestinian state, with international security guarantees for us all. The idea that it would be so simple to sign an agreement, set up the state, and then turn it into an enormous terror base is hard to justify. But the Netanyahu regime's machinations to prevent elections, aided to some significant degree by Abbas' regime's need to cling to power with scant public support is PUBLIC policy, not some quiet strategy from the shadows. And why Smotrich and other supposed hardliners called Hamas "an asset" for years. And again, how many non-combatants have we killed who weren't alive in 2006? Or were too young to vote? Or voted for other parties, as opposed to the 44% that indeed voted Hamas, mostly in a mistaken calculation and with expectations very different from what they got? We can say they chose poorly, like I have, though I've never paid this kind of price for a vote. Using the 2006 election as some kind of license to kill tens of thousands of children is, in my view, most hideous for being either absurdly stupid or intellectually dishonest. But just saying that doesn't help much. We need arguments grounded in knowledge. The fact that they will seldom persuade the people we are arguing with directly is dispiriting, but not disconfirming of their importance. When asked if they thought internal security would improve under Hamas, they answered yes 67.8%– 32.2%. Ok, so clearly they were mistaken here. Terribly. The violent 2007 coup in Gaza just a year later that saw Hamas throwing people off the tops of buildings pretty much puts that to rest. But, again, I think it's important to consider what the election meant to voters, what they cared about, what motivated them, and thus how culpability is ascribed to babies today for their votes then. And on this point, they were seeking to improve their internal security. They felt insecure under PA/Fatah rule. They thought, for whatever reasons, but in part because they connected their insecurity to PA corruption, that Hamas would make them safer. Their priorities were 1) Combatting corruption; 2) Ending security chaos; and 3) Solving poverty/unemployment. Let's note, that none of these three include committing genocide against Jews or Israelis or Zionists or throwing anyone into any body of water of any size. That was not what led to Hamas winning 44% of votes in a parliamentary election. It didn't seem to be much on their radar. And given that close to 80% supported a peace agreement with Israel and that 75% wanted Hamas to change its approach to Israel, well, they were clearly not voting to annihilate my family or community. A final key point here is that 81.4% to 18.6% supported a national unity government of Fatah and Hamas. They were not voting for a Hamas-led Islamist totalitarian regime devoted to Salafist interpretations of sharia law. And they were not voting for an international Caliphate or anything of the sort. Neither for Na$ism nor for a Taliban. SO, the pro-Hamas vote of the people who were alive and of voting age then had little to do with pathological Islamist hatred of Jews or Israel. It was not about wiping us off the face of the earth or map or from history. It was a rejection of the PA's function under Fatah that had them feeling powerless vis a vis its corruption, and concerned for their security. Hamas was seen as a superior option that would help clean up and stabilize a society in transition working with the Fatah, and people overwhelmingly, again, of necessity including some Hamas voters, wanted Hamas to change its approach to Israel and wanted a political solution through a negotiated peace agreement. It was a protest vote regarding a regime led by people who returned from exile with a culture of corruption who were unprepared, or unwilling, or both for setting up the kind of ethical democratic governance we all want. And these people, the Fatah elite who came in and took over were very much interested in rewarding themselves for leading the struggle for a generation in exile and rewarding their own activists and cronies who had been holding out on the ground here.

Second, Hamas won a parliamentary election with 44% of the vote in the West Bank and Gaza. Far from an overwhelming majority. Not even an outright parliamentary majority. More than Likud margins, unless we consider those margins of victory to include all the parties that voters know and want to continue to be coalition parties. And to reiterate, it was a NATIONAL PARLIAMENTARY election. It did not determine executive power over Gaza. Hamas acquired that a little later and by decidedly UNdemocratic means with a violent takeover in 2007 that included throwing people from the tops of buildings. They were not elected to rule Gaza as an executive body. Executive power remained with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah regime. Nonetheless, exit polls for the 2006 parliamentary election are crucial for understanding why 44% of voters would vote for a party with a charter that targets so many of us for death or expulsion. When asked if Hamas should change its policies regarding Israel, voters answered in the affirmative 75.2% to 24.8%. Support for a peace agreement with Israel was 79.5% to 15.5%. These percentages swamp the 44% percent of people who voted for Hamas, and of necessity include many Hamas voters. We can and indeed should consider the importance of Hamas Charters I and II. But however we read them, Palestinian rejection of political resolution and accommodation was not the reason Hamas won 44% of the parliamentary vote. In fact, most disagreed with a hardline pro-violence approach. They wanted things to move in the other direction. So what concerned the electorate that gave Hamas a plurality of votes? When asked if they thought corruption would decrease under Hamas, the answer was yes, 78.1%– 21.9%. And we have to remember that corruption here is not abstract or merely institutional and civic. It had acute material consequences for many voters whose families were shut out and struggling because of it, and suffering from the ramifications of corrupt [mis]management of a society in transition with an economy already dependent on a Jewish-led political entity that had been exploiting them for cheap labor for years. When during the First Intifada Rabin declared "we will break their bones", I remember saying "great, who is going to build our homes and cities?"

If you know the rental market here, you will get my meaning. So here's some rudimentary data to have in your back pocket. Hamas is definitely not an organization that merits our sympathy. They are basically a religious nationalist mafia, a totalitarian movement using religion for power. (Yes, plenty of comparisons are apt here to other movements.) So the question of how many Gazans they represent and for what reasons is crucial both for analyzing what we are doing today, the [in]validity of its justifications, and what this means for envisioning the hour and day and week and month and year after. If we ever bring it. Rahmana leitzlan. First, close to 47% of the people currently living in Gaza weren't even born in 2006 when the election took place. And a large percentage of the other 53% were below voting age. So, the question of the percentage of living Gazans who constituted the 2006 electorate and chose Hamas is relevant. But without isolating a number, we can be confident that it is very very far below 50%. Very. One would hope that right there already, anyone with a smidgen of intellectual honesty would see the fallacy of this propagandistic claim that people use to justify such gruesome violence and its unspeakable scale. One would hope.

u/daringdashienz I've had to step in to stop this type of harassment 4 times now, on every occassion they attacked a cis woman. The most ironic part, I'm trans, I'm the type of person they wanted to harrass. The "can always tell" crowd cannot in fact tell. It gets even worse: on one of those occassions one of them actually went off at me telling me that I should be grateful they're standing up for my rights as a cis woman. This is the actual timeline we are living in. A cis woman harrassing another cis woman cause of transphobia, a trans person stopping it and the harrasser telling the trans woman that shes standing up for the trans womans rights as a cis woman by attacking the cis woman she thinks is trans. *Harassed in the bathroom* I went to visit a friend and on the way back, the bus I was riding stopped at a rest stop, I got off to use the bathroom. When I stepped inside this woman started yelling, "Get out! Get out! Pervert! There's a man in here!" I was very confused, looked around to find the man. "Where?" I asked the woman. She pointed at me saying I was the man, that I must get out of the women's bathroom. I started laughing, said that's funny. She did not think so, she got really mad and another woman joined in, the two of them saying I must be a man because of my hairy legs. I ignored them and just went into a stall, but next thing I know I see an eyeball staring right through it, one of the women was looking. She started banging on the door, telling me to get out, that she was going to call the police, and said something about our state law saying you must use the bathroom of your biological sex. By this time I was getting pretty unnerved, cuz there was two women both yelling at me, but finally another woman came in, saw what was happening, and told the harassers to shut up. I walked out of there, never even having used the bathroom, and decided I was just gonna wait. Got back in the bus, while one of the women followed me, screaming profanities as we drove away. I'm just so confused what even happened. So I'm trans somehow because I don't shave the hair that naturally grows on all women's legs???
