Now the Palms tenants are being pushed out of their homes through renoviction, a state-sanctioned process that allows landlords to evict tenants when they plan repairs that will take longer than 30 days. Join us in demanding real preventative solutions that keep people housed!

When tenants appealed to County code enforcement, these slumlords were completely unfazed by the county’s weak and lax enforcement mechanisms. Why not? Because they know that, at the end of the day, they can keep collecting rent no matter how bad the conditions get.

County reps claim that they are committed to addressing the homelessness crisis in Sac County, but elected officials constantly refuse to make time for tenants. For years, the Palms apartments have been owned by a slew of slumlords who ignored horrible habitability conditions.

For months, Palms tenants have requested an in-person meeting with Supervisor Desmond but his office has deflected by suggesting that tenants meet with his staff. Meanwhile, the Palms tenants are forced to confront the real possibility that they will be pushed to the streets.

In June, dozens of tenants in Los Angeles went on utility strike — they refused to pay their utility bills and demanded the landlord provide transparency as to how the bills are counted.

Three months into the strike, the landlord returned more than $25,000 back to these tenants.

Huge win ‼️ This is Mac. His corporate landlord just back-credited his account with over $700 after dozens of tenants in his building went on utility strike back in June.

The whole building got back over $25,000 in a concession by their corporate landlord Equity Residential.

LA Tenants are going into month four—this September—of a utility strike.

Why? They’re fed up with RUBS: a scam ratio utility billing system that evenly divides a building’s utility usage among tenants without any formulaic explanation.

70% of the building is on strike.

We need to draw attention to a new, exploding type of household debt that only recently emerged: it's called rent debt—or "back rent debt," and it didn't really exist before COVID at all. It's getting little attention in housing discourse and media coverage.

We'll explain it.

We've been coordinating a utility-bill strike in a small town you might have heard of—Los Angeles.

Dozens of folks across multiple buildings have paid rent—but have *withheld* their utility bill payments.

Today marks Day 75 of the strike.

We think we're on the verge of a win.

We looked into it and found quite a few PAMA properties right here in Sacramento. If you want to join the fight against slumlords like this, join us at a meeting soon! Check out our map here: www.google.com/maps/d/edit?...

Tenants in Los Angeles unfurling banners outside of their units as they announce they’re going on utility strike against their landlord Equity Residential — the 5th largest corporate landlord in the U.S.

Nearly 60 units across 2 buildings are now withholding utility payments 👀

News: With the Los Angeles Tenant Union, we're organizing a historic strike against the 5th largest corporate landlord in the United States — and the largest in L.A.

Today, dozens of tenants across two Los Angeles buildings are refusing to pay their utility bills to Equity Residential.

The Palms Tenants have been fighting displacement for over a year now and as Ms. Jackie says in the clip, "That's the whole thing in a nutshell: we do not want to leave this place. This is our home!"

RUBS is something we've heard about a LOT in Sacramento! It's impossible to plan and budget for utility charges that change from month to month and add sometimes hundreds of dollars beyond what tenants signed up to pay in their leases.
debtcollective.bsky.social
Corporate landlords have found another scam.

Have you heard of RUBS? Does the building you pay rent in have RUBS?

RUBS stands for Ratio Utility Billing Systems — and we think it should be abolished.

RUBS Explained:🧵

We say Abolish RUBS.

We're organizing everywhere — but one of our strongest campaigns is happening right now in Los Angeles.

Sign the petition or share it with folks who live in California.

In buildings where landlords use RUBS, tenants don't pay for the utilities (electricity, water, gas) they *actually* use in their own apartments. Instead, landlords charge tenants a portion of the alleged total utility costs of the entire building according to a formula.

Optional RSVP & event details at the link below. Come get fed and/or bring a snack to share with the community. We will also have a phone zap to tell the slumlord Dan Wayne that our neighbors at the Palms are here to stay!
