Voting is an act of community and belonging. I always get emotional when I vote. I see that first day in 🇨🇦 so long ago, landing in Halifax, with all the possibilities it held. We must preserve the community belonging that gives us all a place and a say in this amazing society.

In other times, I would have tweeted about how I am still haunted by the pain and lonely healing in All of Us Strangers. Doing so seems so self-indulgent in this world of today. I feel underserving of such expression. The guilt of surviving and being able to live my life.

I look forward to reading it!

We are interdependent. My emancipation is tied to yours and yours to mine.

What we really need to look at is the very contemporary issues of subjugation and oppression and seek first and foremost everyone's survival. Hearts must beat to pump blood to brain and skin to feel the warmth of the sun on it. After that, we can go to emancipation and flourishing for all. 🧵

human remains, in today's Levantine, Palestinian or Israeli populations. They look and they find them, showing me that we are all part of the great stories of human migration. Such things obfuscate. 🧵

Of course this is an exasperated and slightly pedantic reaction to the world we are living in, in which it can be claimed that Rhodesia was better than Zimbabwe because of property based democracy (whitewashing race and colonialism...), and people look for echoes of DNA from antiquity's 🧵

It requires convincing, legitimacy, and is profoundly affected by power. I wish Hegel's dialectic could become more like Bakhtin's dialogic. The outcome we might see would be mutual respect, engagement with and understanding of the other, & a reimagining of what it means to be a part of a nation. 🧵

If nations are imagined communities, Benedict Anderson's definition which resonates with me, then history is also imagined and co-created. There are the facts of what happened--can be disputed or proven etc., but the meaning is perspectival, & history simply becomes rhetoric for some argument. 🧵

What was the last straw that brought me here? Noticing the patterns of subtle white supremacy on my feeds—such as posts about the “Zimbabwefication” of the world—African history as if race and colonization never existed. How can knowledge ever be uncoerced under such manipulative algorithms?

Now that I've fled Leon's site for bluer skies, I'm sure I'll be called an #Ex-X, but personally, I'll always consider myself a #TwitterQuitter.

I think it will come. For instance, I have been on service this week and unable to give a follow to any of the usual people I have followed in the past on that other site. When I sit down and take a breath, I will do it and I think things will heat up!
