On September 26, a tiny herring savings area closed to trawling, as they were near their limit of herring bycatch.

Since then, trawlers have exceeded their herring bycatch limit by almost one million pounds.

At one point, bottom trawlers in the Bering Sea were bycatching and dumping THREE TIMES the halibut that directed halibut commercial fishermen were allowed to catch and keep.

Veteran reporter Hal Bernton recently dove into Alaska's record-low halibut — including Alaskans' concerns about trawlers.

For the first time ever, Congress has thrown out land use plans developed over years by hunters, fishermen, residents, businesses, Tribes and other locals. They've thrown out three, including the Central Yukon Resource Management Plan here in Alaska.
