I took so many lessons from that character. I visualized her like a big sister and took cues from what she did to become more of a person. Absolutely one of my most formative books from childhood.

if you're interested, I'd highly recommend The Star Fisher by Laurence Yep. I read that book as a kid and it completely changed my brain chemistry in terms of cultural "defaults". It does the thing where it italicizes the foreign language-- the ENGLISH, not the Chinese. I love it.

it's weird!!! just another facet of social colonialism I guess but like I would love to see more media where the American accent/culture/etc is shown as more of a creeping alien force that doesn't belong in various settings

i've wasted so many resources trying to find something that will make this weirdo happy and she spends a whole storyline being anxious about making new friends and leaving her home area only to forget we were bringing new people to meet her because she got overwhelmed by leaving her home area.

It's something so small but so deeply meaningful. And it feels bigger than me in a way I can't describe.

I'm holding something that provided comfort to two different people for multiple decades. It's a piece of history. And I get the privilege of giving it new life, to be held close for years to come.
