This came out so quickly that it probably doesn't make sense but I'm posting it anyway cuz melodrama is fun

CW // vampire, blood, angst with HEA (I swear)

Ben finds Rey, his slayer, after she's been bitten by a vampire. (1/2)

“I killed him before the dawn.” Her voice is beaten blank with exhaustion, with fear. “I should be human again.”
She’s sitting in a minefield of broken, stained glass. Her legs dangle over the edge of the massive cavity where the tower’s window used to be, and her hair has come loose from its braid, blowing back from her ash-streaked face. The city looms dark below her.
Ben steps over the crumbling body in the center of the room. His chest aches as if she put a stake through it.
“I’m so sorry, Rey.”

“Why didn’t it work?” She asks in the same confused tone she’d had at seventeen, when he’d first found her, when she’d tried so hard to learn what her body could do. He’s failed her so utterly.
“I don’t know.” He has to whisper, because if he raises his voice now, he’ll never stop.
This entire building is covered in ash. She killed the entire coven, even with poisoned blood curdling in her veins. Every second Ben had spent training her has led to this, and it isn’t enough to save her.
“I can smell your blood.” Her voice cracks, and something in his chest shatters. He drops the stake.
When her shoulders start to shake, Ben drops down behind her, settling so his legs are outside hers, over the ledge. He hates heights, but he can already see the light between the buildings, the petal-frail tremor of daybreak.
“It’s just a few more minutes, Rey,” he says, wrapping his arms around her. “I’ll be here the whole time.”

Her body is rigid with tension, and she stinks of sulfur and rot. He has to bury his face in her neck to get to the real scent of her. Vanilla in her hair, the tiger balm along her shoulders he’d put there himself, the soft, warm nape of her neck.
“When they replace me,” she asks quietly, once her back has loosened into his chest, “will you be the one to train them?”
“Never.” His throat is too tight. “You’ll be the only one.”
She stays quiet, letting him rock her gently, until the first rays of sunlight split the sky. When she twists toward him, he pulls her close, cupping her cheek. She stares up with urgent eyes he would recognise even if they’d already turned to ash.
“Ben, I need to tell you–”
“I love you,” he beats her to it because of all the things she’s had to fight for, he should never have been one of them. “I should have told you years ago.”

“I wanted,” she starts, but the sunlight hits the bare skin above her bite-guards and she cuts off with a twisted mouth that makes him press his forehead to hers.
“I wanted it too,” he whispers as she grinds her teeth, “I thought we had time. I’m so sorry, Rey.”
There’s a horrifying change in the texture of her cheek, her skin slipping like powder. He pulls back so his face can be the last thing she sees.
“Ben,” she says. Her voice is scorched, eyes dying embers but still focused on him.
She squeezes them shut a moment later, and he’ll never know what she wanted to tell him with her last breath because she’s nothing but ash in his hands, splintering. If he weren’t so afraid of breaking her apart, he’d roar at the daylight that took her from him.
Instead, he holds still, feeling the outline of her, the solidity beneath that she still holds even minutes later.

A) Dark Rey and Kylo Ren (who in truth is a emo boy with too much light left in him)

B) Rey fan girl-ing for Han and Kylo/Ben trying to stop her obsession from getting out of hand.

Hi 😃
Generally speaking, I prefer shorter chapters + more frequent updates. This way, I can stay immersed in the fic throughout the weeks and focus better on each development. And as a writer, I get more interaction this way. If one prefers longer chapters, they could save a few until reading. on.
