For Christmas, a friend gave me a calendar of paintings of the Erie Canal by Lockport artist Joe Whalen.

Here’s December.

Watched the 1995 Serbian film "Marble Ass," a raw, boisterious and radical depiction of trans sex workers in Belgrade. The plot is loose, but it concerns an old friend returning from the Yugoslav wars and bringing chaos and violence with him.

This movie is a blend of documentary and fiction,

Now that I'm older, I appreciate Mr. Banks a bit more than I once did. I can relate to his exasperation. His transformation at the end of the film is quite moving. Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke are very special as Mary and Bert, but David Tomlinson gives the film its heart.

Personal Shopper didn't completely work for me, but it is a haunting experience, and little bits and pieces of it have been floating through my head since I watched it.

As a director, Assayas can leave me a little cold. The two films of his I've liked most are Summer Hours and Clean.

coalesce, it's still a fascinating viewing experience. The story involves a young woman who buys clothes for a celebrity and is also a medium waiting for her dead twin brother to contact her. There are ghosts, creepy text messages, Kristen Stewart trying on beautiful clothes and much more.

Finally caught up with the 2016 film Personal Shopper, starring Kristen Stewart and directed by Olivier Assayas. I wasn't quite as enamored with this as most other people, but it offers numerous pleasures. It's visually thrilling and stunning to look at, so even when it doesn't quite seem to

My 13-year-old niece has gotten pretty good at cribbage, and she best me the first time we played. So it was satisfying to win our rematch.

Just learning that I am guilty of device hoarding because I only replace my devices when they break or I somehow lose them, like the time my cellphone flew off the roof of my car while I was driving on I-90.

Sorry, U.S. economy - I'm not going to change!
