Happy birthday to them 🎂

Apparently there is a particular issue with specialising training places after FY2 because of the supervision needed. We need doctors here but many of the young ones I know will have to go abroad to get the training they need and many won't return.

It's like saying there is an over supply of maths teachers when actually there just aren't schools who can take trainees because they are chronically understaffed. 2/2

But there isn't an oversupply really. What there is a lack of training positions. There are not enough doctors in the NHS to meet patient need but the doctors of the future that might be able to help that can't get training places. 1/2

I used to finish my lessons having a student volunteer to share the mistake they made that lesson they thought other people could learn from.

Obviously pay is important but not being able to progress, the difficulty in getting initial jobs, the incredible workload is crippling. My son started medicine in 2020 so all his friends are now FY1s. I had no idea just how hard it is until now and I consider myself informed.

The problem is I think with the rules around what you can strike about. The problem is there is more than enough work for all of them but not enough jobs. So it is hard for those who can't get a job or get one in an impossible place for them but also for those with jobs. Pay isn't really the thing.

It is a fab fun weekend. I am unfortunately not able to go this year because of *all the things* but hopefully back next year 🙂
