Leaving Derry/Londonderry after three incredible days at the #PeatConf25 felt quite sad this morning. Thanks to @iucn-uk-peat.bsky.social for another outstanding event helping the peatland restoration sector move onward and upward.

Can't wait to soak in all the inspiration contained in my new library addition. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to spend the day with the amazing authors and all the enthusiastic, creative people who joined the session yesterday.

Dr Anna Chilves and Clare Shaw then taught us about the power of creative expression. Equipped with tools and understanding of good story telling, we left the session prepared to tell our own story of peatland restoration in a new, creative and engaging way. Truly a transformative experience!

Braving the wet weather, we set off on an adventure to explore the fascinating world of mosses, liverworts, lichens, mushrooms and all the inconspicuous but ever present forms of life in urban spaces. Guided by Johny Turner, we learned to notice and appreciate the smallest plants out there.

Workshops on day 3 of the #PeatConf25 are always a great opportunity to catch up with the latest research, findings, challenges, issues and successes. This year, though, I had the opportunity to experience something outstanding! 👀

And I found a bottle with a secret message sticking out of the bog!

The best bit? I finally got to see a digger in action! The final puzzle piece in my peatland restoration learning journey. It was impressive - the whole dam was created with 5 minutes! I could stand there and watch the skilled contractor all day!

A great day ouy on @rspb.bsky.social's Springwell Farm as part of @iucn-uk-peat.bsky.social #PeatConf25 looking at peatland restoration of old cutting site, forest to bog, haggs and gullies and drains. Great learning experience!

At this point, I did not know that I was about to see a digger in action! Challenging terrain, wet bog, abundance of sphagnum and sundews. A lovely site! The site was really wet (and so are my socks) but the summer has been dry like most of the UK. It's amazing how quickly peatlands re-wet after it's rained for a few weeks and how much they change in appearance. A sundew looking like an alien, out of this world creature.

Can re-training and upskilling in peatland restoration halt the rise of support of Reform UK?

Peatlands without borders offered really interesting international perspectives.
Marko Kohv spoke about "shaky common ground" as definitions of peatlands (or restoration) vary across different countries, just like views on how we use peatlands.

The brilliant Richard Lindsay currently giving a tour of the Virtual Peatlands Pavilion, a stunning source of information on peatlands across the world. Go check it out! 👇

Back at the #PeatConf25, my favourite part of the year, connecting with with researchers, policy makers, developers, contractors and other experts in the peatland restoration sector. Breaking the borders in the pursuit of nature conservation.

Day 2 of the #ClimateSmartAdvisors General Assembly means fieldtrip! 🚎 Cortijo de la Bódeda is an organic farm specialising in tomato production. A lovely day out with the best hosts, soaking up the philosophy of this great farming concept.

#ClimateSmartAdvisors Work Package 2 with Tom O'Dwyer and András Vér Juan Salvador with his dad and Juan Antonio letting us taste their organic tomatoes.

What can conventional farmers learn from organic? Shifting focus from short-term planning and operation to long-term vision for the farm.
saraherbanova.bsky.social
Terminology can be your worst enemy. All advisors I spoke to don't use the word "mitigation" when talking to farmers. They adivse on adaptation measures only, because those offer tangible benefits and co-benefits to farmers while often reducing emissions.
