I've now followed this Avon from trickling streams north of Pewsey, to the sea. Often only catching glimpses of it, other times embracing the river bank.

Only 3% of our rivers are accessible. As @righttoroam.bsky.social says:

Isn't it time more were opened up?

I arrived at the cathedral close to sunset. There stands the Walking Madonna. In a fit of conceit I had to have my picture taken with her. Then a dash to the train station to catch the hourly train home.

The Avon twisted into Salisbury, the cathedral ever visible. At one point I was following the wrong river but it took me to a rather natty set of public loos, with each named after a river.

Having never visited old sarum before, the scale was mindblowing. 5 thousand years of history. I need to visit properly another time when I can stay long enough to make the entrance fee worthwhile.

The river widened and the landscape expanded.

Approaching busy A345 dual carriageway I played the familiar game. How would I get across? Bridge, tunnel or suicidal dash? Bridge. Phew.

Reaching Amesbury just as a church bell tolled 12, a tea and cake stop.

I stitched various paths together. Sometimes following the Pewsey Avon trail, sometimes following footpaths and roads closer to the river.

Chocolate box villages with thatched roof houses were linked by the woven thread. Churches alternating with tranquil fields

Todays original plan: 4 mile recovery and a chill day

What actually happened with a sunny day and the offer of a lift:
Get dropped off at Upavon. My legs said 'way hey! Lets GO!!! And off they went eating up the miles while I stuffed food in at the top end and admired the views.

My first King Charles postbox, a yew tree said to be over 3000 years old (just wow!) and a visit to Janes Austen's home. A splendidly muddy walk.
Thoroughly recommend the LDWA walks for those who fancy a decent stretch.

From downpours to sunshine. I joined the London LDWA group on a 16 mile loop today around Alton. Nice to chat and hand over navigating responsibility.

Hello Peacock, what are you doing in my living room? Shouldn't you be tucked up somewhere safely sleeping?

What a differnce a day makes. Might as well go the full b&w on this grey day.

We made our way through Mucking Marsh, with reeds gently swaying as the sun lowered. Far more beautiful than the name suggests.

The walk from Tilford Town station to the car completed the connection. A very gentle sort of day.

Coalhouse fort came into sight and with it the Engine room Cafe. The cake looked very inviting and was indeed, excellent. Highly recommend visiting this friendly place.

There were remarkable views at the fort, with ships sailing past the green grass.

This part of the Essex coast seems to have many free ranging ponies and eventually we came to some which seemed to be sporting the most remarkable hair-dos. On closer inspection, burrs had shaped their manes into wild spectacles. The latest in pony fashion. It looked v. uncomfortable though.

Walking the coast path. Tilbury to Stanford-Le-Hope. 12 and a bit miles.

These soft days, on the edge of winter, can be so beautiful. Long shadows, golden light, crisp chill air. I knew we had to head to the coast.

Tilbury Fort was closed, but we could walk around the outside. /1

Heading east on the M25. Pretty anvil over the east side of Kent.

It was a beautiful morning for a run, but might need to rethink using the towpath for speedwork when its icy. Supposed to be speed running not speedskating.

I enjoy looking at the @metoffice.gov.uk WOW during more extreme temperatures to look for hot and cold spots.
However, one of these things is not like the others...

I miss Japan where the trains are clean and reliable and people queue in an orderly manner for them.

Trains delayed through Guildford.
