I have upgraded my sprang loom, and made use of the dragon I liked from the 1410 book of hours but did not want to wear on my poncho.

The bands are for putting dowels in at different levels for different sizes of fabric creation…

The research
Green dragon illustration from medieval manuscript- more dinosaur like than like a modern dragon. The creature is curled up and the tail goes over the neck and curls into a spiral. The head, feet and tail are the inspiration for my dragon A different green dragon illustration with two feet and wings with spiral curls on the tops of the wing struts - these inspired the wings The one that got a way. Another illustration in red with gold wings. The dragon has two legs, blue horns and an extremely sheepish (in both senses) expression.

No brain for projects I want to finish, so I went wild on a poncho I bought from eBay for £2.

The dragon is inspired by two medieval illustrations, but I chickened out of using my real favourite…

More sprang! The craft that’s fun to say.

I made a teeny tiny hat, and two samples. I’m going to make a load of panels in different patterns and stitches for practice and crochet them together. Then, depending on the size I might make a cushion cover or something…

Sprang! A practice /experimenting opportunity/ sampler* final use undetermined. Here it is stretched out and looking rather organic and uneven, as if it grew naturally and has been harpooned and pegged out to dry.

*they’re experiments or possibly design decisions, not mistakes

The edge of some sprang fabric being pulled sideways to show the shape of the weave and the stretch. The fabric is still on the frame and being made. It is woven from colour changing cotton yarn in green, gold, brown and white

Sprang in progress. Variegated threads in golds whites and greens are tensioned on a frame and four or five rows of twists have been made at the top, kept in place by a metal knitting needle.

Craft things I have learned today:
1. Sprang exists as a craft and history
2. You don’t need new equipment
3. You can experiment and get nice twists and shapes
4. My weird add colour/new yarn method worked
5. Balance is key
6. Plastic knitting needles are too weak for shed bars

I am learning to make needle lace… and being a miserable sinner I am inventing my own approach by experimentation instead of seeking the wisdom of my forefibres. The first lesson I learned is that you really do need sticky back plastic… Forgive my wobbly fills and uneven stitch counts.
