"I’ll pay for him. And I’d like a cup as well, please.” Will’s head turned so fast he still jokes that he almost broke his neck, the sound of the foreign man’s voice taking his breath away. The closeness of said man had Will feeling warm all over, his hot chocolate temporarily forgotten. And the man, who seemingly came from nowhere, magically appearing at Will’s side, handed the woman a $50 bill with a wink and a smile. She gleefully gave him his own cup before scurrying away towards a small group down the sidewalk. Will and Hannibal stood there, nearly a foot apart, each holding their own steaming cup of $2.00 hot chocolate (that Will still claims wasn’t worth the $50.00 that Hannibal ‘wasted’ on it). “Thank you—“ “I apologize for—“ They both paused before chuckling, Will looking down at his cup and Hannibal taking the moment to study his face. If pressed, they would both blame the cold for the rosiness of their cheeks.

As Hannibal held Nigel's hand, sat beside his hospital bed, he vowed he would never allow anyone to ever hurt his brother again. The long hours of surgery, 3 months of a medically-induced coma, and another month of Nigel not waking up-- that was more than Hannibal could handle. Let alone the year of physical therapy that followed; teaching Nigel how to walk, talk, and eat on his own again. It's been two years since then, and Nigel sometimes still struggles to find words for what he wants to say. He sometimes can regulate his emotions. Goes from anger to depression in the span of seconds, then laughs at himself and his "stupid fucking brain" for making him laugh, his smile a little smaller, eyes a little duller. He hasn't seemed happy since moving in with Hannibal.

"Hannibal Lecter," he replies, finally finding his voice. He's not used to feeling so... awkward. Like he is standing on uneven ground, off-balance and unable to find something to hold onto. "Hannibal," Will says, trying out his name with that same smile, "That's not Italian." Hannibal's knees feel weak. He smiles, knowing it's ridiculously wide, but he can't help it, "No, it's not. I am only here as a student. I'm working towards being a surgeon." "Dr. Lecter," Will replies with a glint in his eyes, and once more Hannibal wonders how he is still standing with how badly his legs wish to give out on him. Surely this boy knows how he is affecting him? "Ah, not yet," Hannibal sheepishly muses. "Someday."

"Farmboy," he near whispers, his voice a little shaky, his face heated like with fever, his eyes darting back and forth between those so dark they reflect the night sky. He swallows, his mouth dry, and he asks, "What is your name?" The farmboy inhales slowly, blinking, almost shocked at the question, before his hand raises gently, fingers brushing a damp curl behind Will's ear in such a tender and intimate action, it draws the breath from Will's lungs. "Hannibal," he replies, just as quiet. And when Will finally breathes again, he smells the rain, the wetness of the grass, the ozone of the storm, the heat of lightning, and the intensity of thunder. He smells leather and sweat and mud and damp hay. And he smells the interest of a compatible Alpha; one with dark eyes and light hair, who has only ever done everything Will has ever asked of him without complaint, without argument, without reward. "Hannibal," Will repeats, the name tasting of rich apples and cherries and wine, of honeyed bread and sweet rolls and sugar. It's deep and dark and light and wonderful-- "Will," Hannibal says in turn, the corner of his mouth curving up just a tick. And then Will pushes forward, closing the gap between them, lips on lips to see if the Alpha tastes as sweet as his name did on his tongue. He did.

There’s bloody noses and bruised jaws, cracked knuckles, both of them panting and glaring at each other. “Fucking hell, Han,” Nigel growls, wiping blood from his lip, “I’m fucking SORRY I’m not as PERFECT as you! That’s all I heard growing up! ‘Why can’t you be more like Hannibal, Nigel? Have you ever tried acting like Hannibal? Don’t you know Hannibal is fucking perfect?’ Fuck!” Hannibal pauses, straightening up and clearing his throat. “I’m… sorry, what?” Nigel narrows his eyes at his brother’s body language, unsure if he should trust letting his guard down just yet. “You heard me, asshole. Every damn day I got that little speech. And when I *did* try being like you, nobody even noticed! Nobody cared!” He throws his hands up in the air before allowing himself to fall back onto the chaise lounge. Hannibal glances down at the floor, eyes flitting back and forth, unseeing. “I see,” he murmurs quietly. Then chuckles. Nigel frowns, “what the fuck is so funny?” Hannibal looks back up, maroon eyes meeting brown, “All I ever wanted,” he says, “was to be more like you.” Nigel freezes, confused. He blinks once, “Huh?” “Carefree,” Hannibal replies, “with not a worry in the world. Able to do as you please, even if it meant upsetting our parents. They were never mad for long, always so fond of you, spoiling you rotten. You *are* the baby, after all.”

Mawmaw June huffed a joyful-sounding laugh, setting aside her magazine and snuffing her cigarette. She leaned on the counter to see Will better, pushing both the candy and his quarter back towards him, “Non, non, you keep your money and sweets, child. Just the one though, you want more then you gonna pay me.” Will smiled up at her, gap tooth and all, taking his candy and stuffing it into the pocket of his overalls, “Merci, Mawmaw! But if’n I could, I’ll buy another. For my cousin, Bobby! He didn’t get no quarters for when he lost his tooth.” “He didn’t get no quarters?” Mawmaw June sounded scandalized, placing a hand over her heart, “Well bless me, the tooth fairy must’ve gotten lost out in the bayou. Bobby’s ‘ol man and him live on that houseboat, is that right?”

“No,” Hannibal says, his voice firm. He stands up, ignoring Will’s whimper and weak-fisted grip on his hand. He turns to his cousin, his dearest confidant, and her two trusted guardsmen, “I will draw their attention away from Will. Fetch my armor and sword. Mason wants a fight? I’ll bring the heads of his men to his front door.” “Hannibal—“ “Beverly, Price, you stay with Will. Once the baby is born, get them both to the safe house. I’ll follow when I can.” “Yessir,” they reply. Chiyoh is livid, “You are a fool!” “I am your King!” He shouts as he turns on her, “And I will not flee like some coward!” He faintly hears Will whimper, eyes locked on Chiyoh. “That is what your father said and look where it brought him! Six feet under the castle grounds!” Hannibal bares his fangs, “I will do whatever it takes to protect my family and the people of my kingdom. You are either with me, Chiyoh, or I bid you go with Will.”

He shivers, closing his eyes and taking a slow, deep breath. On the exhale he feels the way Nigel’s lips quirk into a smile against his skin, that warm hand sitting firmly on his thigh, thumb rubbing back and forth across the fabric of his slacks. “You say that word,” Nigel murmurs into his ear, “and we leave. I’ll take you home, run you a bath, and worship your body like you fucking deserve.”

Mating runs always end in blood. Alphas chase Omegas to trigger heat/rut. Omegas fight back, testing the Alpha, making them earn their submission. While Alphas want to test if the Omega is strong, protective; able to defend future pups. It’s a deadly dance of feral instincts.
