TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

Happy to join in and follow one whom I'd missed. Sounds like it's rather late in the day which is a pity.
This is a lovely idea. If you’re not familiar with @wombat37.bsky.social, you’ve missed out. He’s been an uplifting presence on here, and has dealt with his approaching death with extraordinary openness, honesty, bravery and humour. One of the very best on here.

Possibly my favourite find so far while clearing out the old family home in Gothers.
The original invoice for the building of the house etc.
Bargain.

Do not, whatever you do, employ someone *like* me for your doggy daycare needs. SOMEONE forgot to add today to the list of dates for which the dogwalker was needed.

Every human being "contributes to society" by existing. It's not measurable, and nobody needs to jusify their existence. This language is abhorrent.
This is so disgusting.

I have been in charge of the music at today's market and there has not been one Christmas tune. Everyone seems quite happy.

Found this pic - these mugs date to 3600 BC, recovered from a volcano-covered village on the Greek island of Santorini (took this pic in a museum there). Would love these in my house. #pottery #art

Martin Parr has died & this grimmest gloomiest greyest, Sundayest of Sundays is the perfect day to watch Signs of the Times.
All four extraordinary episodes are full of pathos, beauty & humour, life & love stories told through relationships with interiors & objects

I absolutely hate the phrase "share a son/daughter." Can't really say why but it grinds my gears.

Lots of complementary (not competing) markets and fairs going on in west London today. Little craft one at The Black Lion pub down on the river where Hammersmith meets Chiswick. You DO fancy a damp walk, you do. #londonmarkets

A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).

Could you donate blood this month?
