The Nuremberg Laws stripped Jews of their German citizenship. They became refugees but emigration was limited. So they were sent to work camps. Which became death camps. Camps became overloaded and harbingers of disease. Then came the “final solution”. We are well on our way.

I wonder (and this is a reach of a comparison) if his experience can be compared to how Mexicans have a class hierarchy in which none of them want to be at the bottom. S. Italians were no longer at the bottom.

Thank you for doing your duty. My (Italian) grandfather was racist. A result of Southern Italians being treated poorly until they needed to count them as white. His father immigrated long after abolition and didn’t live in the south, but was still touched by it. Our country’s racist foundation.

Nope. I cried on the phone to my dad when Trump won the first time and he said “it’ll be ok, it’ll be great, just wait”. Pretty sure he continues to vote for him despite my immigrant spouse and mixed race kids. He’s not quite the MAGAt his father was though.

I had one grandpa who was 101 when he died. He fought the Nazis, anti-aircraft. My other grandpa was a day away from deploying when the war was announced as over. He stayed and buried the bodies that came back. The latter voted for Trump til his dying day. He ate up Fox News.

The men in power don’t see soldiers as people. They are pawns to them but they come home to US and we all deserve all of the tools to support them the right way. They go out, fight wars over oil, come home different, for who? Once they aren’t toy soldiers the men in charge stop caring.

I agree, it’s so beautiful. It’s also very necessary so we understand why he’s so crotchety and how much he is overcoming on the adventure.
