Do you have a My Health Record? Be aware that changes are being made to the online medical records system which may impact sex worker privacy.

My Health Record is an online record of your health history including test results and vaccinations. It can be accessed by any healthcare provider you see for care, including during an emergency. You can access it through the MyHealth app or by linking it with your MyGov account. There are changes being made to how My Health Record works.

From 2026, healthcare providers delivering pathology results (like STI tests) will have to upload results to your My Health Record unless you ask them not to. There are steps you can take to control who sees your information.

“My regular GP doesn’t know I do sex work so I get my STI tests done elsewhere. If my results are uploaded to My Health Record, how do I stop my GP seeing them?”
You can ask the testing provider to not upload a particular report to your My Health Record. Test results will still go to the provider who has requested them so you can get your results.

You can also remove or restrict access to test results once they are uploaded to My Health Record. If you choose this option, you will need to remove/restrict access for each new set of tests.

You can also cancel your My Health Record, or restrict access so your GP can’t access it at all.

Age Verification risks censorship of essential health information.
A current Senate Committee Inquiry is looking into the impacts of the Search Engine Code for class 2 content

New online safety act class 2 codes require search engines, app stores, hosting services, ISPs and social media platforms to implement 'age assurance' mechanisms. These codes are meant to begin from December 2025-March 2026. Age assurance technology creates privacy and data risks. Tech services cannot guarantee that non-porn content (like sexuality education) will be protected from age-gating or removal. There is currently a Senate Committee Inquiry looking into the class 2 codes for search engines.

We call on the government to:
Refer all class 2 codes to the Senate Standing Committee for the Scrutiny of Delegated Legislation and Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights.

Explicitly protect sexual and reproductive health education, LGBTQAI+ community support, drug related harm reduction, and sex worker advertising and resources from age gating.

Work with public health and sexuality educators, organisations, peer and harm reduction groups to ensure public interest content is not restricted.

Our submission in response to this Bill outlines why the "end demand model" also known as the "Nordic Model" harms sex worker autonomy, health and safety.

'End demand' legislation:
does not reduce the size of the sex industry.
Sweden criminalised the purchase of sexual services in 1999, a policy often cited as the reason for the decline in street based sex workers. However, the drop in numbers can also be explained by the rise of new technology that allows sex workers to advertise online.

does not reduce trafficking or modern slavery.
research suggests that any form of criminalisation perpetuates stigma, discrimination, and the social marginalisation of sex workers. It also heightens risks of harm and exploitation.

creates negative outcomes for sex workers
Global evidence shows that criminalising clients forces sex workers to choose between working lawfully and working safely, and creates a significant barrier to reporting crime.

Research confirms full decriminalisation is the only effective legal framework for protecting sex workers' health, safety and rights.

Sex worker visibility will be front and centre in Darlinghurst from November, as the iconic and powerful statue Joy returns to her home neighbourhood.

Joy was sculpted by artist Loui May in 1995. She was the world's first statue of a sex worker and was a tribute to the workers of Darlinghurst. She received mixed reactions and in 1997 was moved to Macquarie University's Sculpture Park.

After a massive community effort, Joy will return home to Darlinghurst. In 2023, sex worker activist and policy consultant Julie Bates AO, artist Loui May, and historian Dr Catherine Freyne along with sex workers and allies, launched a campaign to see Joy take pride of place back in her home neighbourhood. Thanks to funding from City of Sydney and Loui's collaboration with a local foundry, Joy has been recast in bronze. The Lord Mayor will unveil the new iteration of Joy in November. It also marks 30 years since NSW became the first jurisdiction in unceded Australia, and globally to decriminalise sex work.

Join Dr Catherine Freyne and Julie Bates AO to celebrate: Saturday 8 November 2025 at 1pm on the corner of Stanley and Yurong Streets, Darlinghurst on Gadigal Land. This is a public event and celebration. Wear red and bring your umbrella!

What's on the agenda?
This year, National Forum will focus on the theme 'Towards Decriminalisation and Beyond". We will reflect on the ongoing fight for decriminalisation and sex worker rights - where we've been and where we're headed. National Forum provides an opportunity for sex workers to come together to network and talk about what's important to us. It includes peer-led sessions such as workshops, panels, presentations, and social events. Over the coming weeks, we will give you a preview of some of the sessions that will be on offer. It's International Sex Worker Pride Day! 🎉 Our community is diverse, strong and resilient and today is a day to celebrate our achievements. We extend solidarity and love to all of our fellow sex workers today. ❤️

Celebrated on 14 September,
Sex Worker Pride Day was launched in 2019 by the Global Network of Sex Work Projects
The aim of the day was to increase the visibility of sex worker stories and activism. It’s one of four annual events that highlight sex worker rights.

The others are International Sex Worker Rights Day (3 March); International Sex Workers Day (2 June); and International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers (17 December).

Stand with us this International Sex Worker Pride Day and celebrate the contributions of sex workers in your community.

Today is particularly important for sex workers affected by criminalisation.
However, even in jurisdictions where sex work is decriminalised, we still experience stigma and discrimination. Sex worker pride is important because it:
creates a space for sex workers to connect and build community.
strengthens our activism by fostering solidarity and mutual support, including among allies and the broader community.
encourages a shift in societal attitudes towards greater acceptance and respect.
challenges systemic whorephobia by pushing back against the stigma and negative stereotypes.
encourages the recognition of sex work as work.

NSW has reported an increase in mpox cases this month. Vaccinations help minimise symptoms. Keep yourself and our community safe. For more information visit linktr.ee/scarlet_alliance

Mpox is a viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus. It was first reported in Australia in 2022 and remains an issue in our broader community, wit recent reports of increased cases in NSW in September 2025. It's important that we all do our part to keep ourselves and our community safe. This means understanding the signs and symptoms of mpox and what measures we can all take to prevent it from spreading.

Mpox is spread through direct skin-to-skin contact with rashes, blisters or sores, or contact with semen or other body fluids from a person with mpox. It can also be spread through contaminated bedding and towels.

Symptoms of mpox
Symptoms usually begin 3-21 days after exposure but people may be infectious for up to four days before symptoms start.
Rashes, pimple-like lesions or sores, particularly in areas that are hard to see such as the genitals, anus or buttocks.
Ulcers, lesions or sores in the mouth.
Rectal pain (pain in and around the anus), which may occur without a rash.
Other early symptoms can include fever or chills, headache, muscle aches and back ache, tiredness and swollen lymph nodes.
If you think you have mpox, seek medical attention immediately.

Age verification will impact more than just teenagers on social media. There are fears new regulations will lead to the censoring of sex work advertising and health and community resources. Further reading links are available under ‘Resources’ at linktr.ee/scarlet_alliance

Beyond social media, they will also apply to all tech platforms, including search engines and websites.

Publicised as a way to prevent young people from accessing harmful content, they will impact everyone who uses the internet.

How will age verification affect sex workers?
Content platforms may need to implement age verification technology like facial scanning or ID checks. The cost will likely put smaller, independent platforms out of business.
The regulations may lead to over capture and apply to sexual health information and sex worker advertising directories.
Rather than comply with regulations, platforms may mass remove adult content, excluding sex workers from online spaces.
Website users may be funnelled from compliant sites to illegal sites that steal the paid content of sex workers.

Tech and legal experts have warned that regulatory changes to Australia's Online Safety Act may see sex worker advertising and health and educational content blocked by online platforms. Further reading available under ‘Resources’ at linktr.ee/scarlet_alliance

As the Australian eSafety Commissioner rolls out a new phase of the Online Safety Act, we look to the UK to see how its regulations have restricted access to important and life saving information. Much like Australia’s, the UK Online Safety Act was sold as a way to safeguard children and young people from harmful content. However, UK citizens have reported access to topics like sexual health, sexual assault support, gender affirming care and pro-Palestine content have been censored.

Regulations under Australia’s Online Safety Act (OSA) will come into effect soon, but experts say platforms may end up blocking health and educational content and sex worker advertising to comply with them.

What does this mean for sex workers? OSA regulations mean tech businesses like search engines and websites will have to put measures in place to remove or control specific content. This includes real or simulated consensual sex; nudity; violence; drugs; or themes like suicide.
Content platforms will need to implement age verification technology like facial scanning or ID checks.
Regulations may apply to sex worker advertising, driving away clients and income.
Sexual health and education and drug harm reduction content may be blocked.
Sex worker community resources may be censored, undermining our safety strategies.

It's World Sexual Health Day and this year's theme is 'Sexual Justice', meaning a world in which all people have the resources to make informed decisions about their sexual health. We can only achieve sexual justice when sex work stigma and discrimination is removed.

A United Nations expert has warned against police and immigration raids that target migrant sex workers, saying they can isolate people and discourage them from seeking help. Link in our bio for the full report.

The UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery visited Australia in November 2024. They recently released a report which highlights the negative impacts of raids which unfairly target Asian sex work establishments.
A quote reads police and immigration raids on workplaces can have significant negative impacts... they may drive individuals further underground... discouraging them from seeking help or engaging with authorities, which can perpetuate exploitation and abuse".

The report recommends decriminalisation of sex work across unceded Australia. It also made other recommendations to Federal Government including ensure enforcement practices do not involve discriminatory raids, , particularly that may disproportionately affect migrant sex workers. Review past enforcement practices including Operation Inglenook. Involve sex workers and sex work organisations in law and policy development. Ensure that anti-trafficking measures do not target or penalise migrant sex workers.

The Disability Royal Commission recently made recommendations to government to improve the experiences of people with disability. Some of these recommendations included a review of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.
