Tighter government control of the internet is, of course, the natural outgrowth of initial failed attempts to control the internet.

In fact, in some cases, that initial failure is entirely expected and built into the plan. In the US, AV advocates said early on they knew initial bans wouldn't work.

Tatsuya Nakadai was one of the most prolific actors to ever grace cinema. Few other performers are vital to as many greatest films of all time as he was. When one thinks of Japanese post-war cinema, it’s inevitably his visage, his voice, his presence that come to mind

Me and @kaylakumari.bsky.social sat down to talk about the Smith & Taylor Classics reissue of Vernon Lee's HAUNTINGS, one of my favorite collections of short fiction out there.

The Face of Horror: A Conversation With Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya and Gretchen Felker-Martin
Gretchen Felker-Martin and Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya discuss the surprisingly queer 19th century book Hauntings by Vernon Lee, which was re-released last week.

Few artists’ entire body of work have meant as much to me over the course of my life as Drew Struzan’s has. With his gift every movie felt epic & important whether the artwork was framed in the movie theater lobby or sitting on the video store shelf.

Diane Keaton was so good on THE YOUNG POPE that I still regularly think of her standing in the bamboo grove beside Silvio Orlando, or her sudden terror in running from him when he professes his love. Rest in peace to one of the greats.

Spencer Davis Group needle drop an all-timer
This modern fable wears its Frank Capra influences on its sleeve, built on a poignant message about how the grass isn't always greener. The results are mixed at best but Belushi & Hamilton's chemistry made this lighthearted fantasy a good time even if its isn't a great movie. Michael Caine delivers!

And porn. If you're touting "science" about the damaging effects of pornography you're carrying water for right-wing orgs that for ten years have pushed anti-porn (anti-masturbation) pseudoscience as a justification for censorship of sex and sexuality online.

Porn is not "a public health crisis."
