Kelly: He runs around on stage talking about lethality and the warrior ethos.. That’s not the message that should be coming from the Secretary of Defense… He runs around on a stage like he’s a 12 year old playing army. It’s embarrassing.

I think the closest analogue to the Marjorie Taylor Greene/Tucker Carlson/Candace Owens movement is the Anti-Masonic party of the Jacksonian era: they may accidentally walk backwards into correct beliefs (Jackson/Trump is bad) but the underlying worldview is still absurd and dangerous

1/ Quick thread for world AIDS day. I don’t know why this memory didn’t come back until now.

My parents divorced in 1978, and my mother found herself a 38 year old single parent of a 2 and a 6 year old. She was a college graduate, but didn’t really have any career prospects.

Apparently the Mamdani campaign doesn’t see winning an election as a reason to stop campaigning
Soon small businesses won’t have to wait for Small Business Saturday to get attention from their Mayor.

Some changes that they can look forward to:

Adm Bradley was/is screwed.
If he gave the illegal order, he's screwed. If he complied with the order, he's screwed. If he defied the order, he'd have been court martialed, knowing GOP led Congress would let him hang.

If Congress does nothing the rest of the military knows they'll need to comply.

So what happens when they fail to deport millions of brown people, are kicked out of power and have nothing to show for the past ten years other than a destroyed economy & the hatred of every decent person on earth?
This is the crux of the bargain white ppl made voting for trump & the gop. "Rid us of brown ppl & make white ppl the majority again & we will sacrifice our jobs, savings, homes, and even children." They 💯 factored in those losses & decided it was worth it. That's why nothing else he does matters

I would think Bradley’s reputation would have been harmed by, you know, committing a war crime, not by somebody noticing he’d committed a war crime.

And Hegseth said at the time that he watched the attack *live*. If he watched it live, then he either gave the orders or knew exactly what orders were given that day.

kinda seems like what happened is that Bradley correctly understood that he was being ordered to commit war crimes but did not anticipate that anyone would later distinguish between the types of war crimes he was willing to commit
But it does worry me a little bit to see military officials angry about Bradley being thrown under the bus without a concurrent acknowledgement that he did in fact commit an obvious war crime.

This World AIDS Day, we remember the hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers lost to HIV and AIDS, and those living with HIV today. We must remind ourselves and each other that the fight isn’t over until the epidemic is over for everyone.

Every year since 1988, the United States has recognized World AIDS Day — until now.

Why not? Maybe because the Trump administration doesn’t want to acknowledge that its foreign aid cuts led to nearly 150,000 deaths from AIDS, according to Boston University researchers.

Shameful.

If immigration judges are neutral and independent as due process requires, then they must be independent from the Executive Branch.

We must move immigration judges from Article II to Article I to provide a check on a lawless administration like this one.

Senator Kelly is correct.

Plus a Public Service Announcement:

KEY section of Department of Defense's Law of War Manual is 18.3.2.1.

The VERY rule on the "requirement" to refuse illegal orders gives as its paradigmatic example of what is "clearly illegal:
"orders to fire upon the shipwrecked."

They demonstrated pretty conclusively that they understand how to cover pardons as if they are huge scandals when they ran multiple days of banner headlines and scolding op-eds and follow ups when Biden pardoned Hunter exactly one year ago.

They just choose not to for trump because they like him
It’s wild how the press is ok with the president abusing the pardon power. That used to be one of the most scrutinized things about a presidency.

This is all true but

1) under no definition are we currently at war with Venezuela under domestic US law

2) since we aren’t, the initial strike was just as much a murder as the follow up

The failure to understand this by a huge range of actors is really driving me up the wall.
If the Venezuelan sailors were enemy combatants, then the 2nd strike is a war crime.

If the Venezuelan sailors weren’t enemy combatants, then both strikes are criminal murder.

It’s that simple.
