This is gonna sound a bit [bong rip] but it's weird how a SCOTUS this brazenly fucked still functions as the be-all end-all of American law, like there's no mechanism available to just be like "hey, this court is *obviously* just making shit up, so, no thank you."

It feels like a cheat code.

A political action committee called Excellence Minnesota collected a $157,000 war chest to spend in support of right-wing school board candidates across four Minnesota school districts. They are likely to target other races in 2026, legal fellow @ksteinberg29.bsky.social writes.

I thought St Paul didn't mess around because Rick Varco is the entire city DFL party and holds every seat on the charter commission. You have a Strong Varco system of government. Very efficient.

The white, suburban leadership of the DFL is dying to wash their hands of Ilhan and the Somali community. Ilhan and other Somali pols' turnout machine in Minneapolis has saved them over and over again and they still primary her every year. It's embarrassing.

At the end of her video, that clip is outside a building at Lake and Blaisdell. So as I said earlier—Lyndale/Whittier neighborhoods are going to be seeing ICE.
This fight has never been about undocumented people. Take a look at how they are treating American citizens.

This is my "Dutch Auction" theory of authoritarianism.

It's no coincidence, for example, that the Wannsee Conference, where the Nazi top leadership signed off on the Final Solution, took place just after the military tide turned outside Moscow, and the U.S. declared war on Germany.
The most dangerous moment in every authoritarian regime is when it realizes that its power has crested and is now falling. This is when they realize that if they are to achieve their maximalist ambitions, now they have to throw the dice — because no matter how bad the odds, their odds are best now.

I feel like it is very hard to function on a daily basis if you think too hard about how many things in the US are completely falling apart and/or actively being destroyed right now, which is one upside to being recently laid off

I am struck by the way the local press is referring to the use of “less lethal weapons” on lawful protesters as if this is a good thing. And my next thoughts are Black Panthers, Kent State, AIM. Precedent doesn’t make violence against dissent legal or right.

If I pointed a loaded assault rifle at someone in the street with the obvious intent of intimidating them, I would be arrested and charged with assault (or worse).

Another example relevant to Rethinking I-94 of how removing roads doesn't lead to complete gridlock because people adapt by taking fewer trips, with no negative impact on the economy. @mndot.mn.gov uses traffic models that don't readily allow for this possibility of traffic evaporation.

Hmmm, I twas to be an architect. Got to school, flunked first semester. Dragged through another 4 years but ran out of money. Bussed tables, then server/ bartender. Creative knowledge and general wits led me to design a full build out for a local hospitality company.

I have largely gotten over the American insistence on not asking for help. It's dumb, it's inefficient, and it's wildly counterintuitive to human nature - we're not meant to function as standalone individuals (and almost never do, in reality).

So when I need help, I almost always will ask for it.
